Have you got access to FindMyPast???

I found that they had a couple of extra items included in my grandfather's file that ancestry did not have ................. including a letter from him asking to be demobbed early because of his wife's difficulties with money, and a letter from his former employer to say he would be delighted to have my Grandfather back working with him.

Ask if they have the records and if they will release the information to you.

I guess this is where you found your information on what happened to the children ..........

There is a note on the father's military record that 6 children were placed in care of Richmond Poor Law Guardians on condition for mother neglecting them 31-3-19

Harry was discharged from the Labour Corp on 31 July 1920

Isolated homes, or scattered homes as they were eventually called, placed small groups of children in ordinary houses scattered around the town or city.

Unions which had a large number of scattered homes usually also built a headquarters home which acted as a receiving or probationary home for new arrivals, short-term inmates, and those requiring special supervision. It also provided an administrative and supplies base for the outlying homes.

The two homes were officially Richmond Union Scattered Homes, 1 & 16-18, St Leonard's Road, Mortlake

The Richmond Union established several scattered homes which in 1908 were located at 16-18, St Leonard's Road, Mortlake, with a boys' home at 1 St Leonard's Road.

I guess from that last sentence that the girls were in #16-18.


Records for the Richmond Union are apparently kept at ............

Surrey History Centre, 130 Goldsworth Road, Woking, Surrey GU21 6ND.
Holdings include: Guardians' minutes (1836-1930).

Richmond Local Studies Library, Old Town Hall, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond TW9 1TP.
Holdings include Admissions and discharges (1843-1855, 1861-1974 with gaps); Births (1866-82); Deaths (1914-74); Creed registers (1844-1937); etc.

Hi everyone,

Please can anyone help me with trying to find the listings of six children sent to the Poor Law Guardians 31st March 1919 the address is 16/18 St Leonards Road Mortlake Surrey & 1 St Leonards Road Mortlake Surrey one was for boys & the other Girls
The children were Ellen May1908, Charles Albert 1909, Ivy Florence1912, Rose Victoria1913, Henry James 1915 & Lombert John 1916 ....all with the sur name CATTEN ....all born Richmond Surrey

Their parents were Harry William CATTEN 1888 & Catherine Maud (nee BARNEY) 1889 also born Richmond

i have tried every search i can think of to find them listed but with no luck as yet

any help with this would be very much appreciated

Ivy Florence Catten (miss transcribed on her birth cert as Catton) was my mother
