I've got back to Nathaniel Jesson born 1700ish, Deptford, Kent who married an Elizabeth. He was a stonemason and died 1765.
There is a Nathaniel Jesson 1622-1652 who came from Deptford and was a sea captain in the First Dutch War. He was killed and his widow, Alice (nee Lowe) and family were awarded a bounty of £500 by Parliament which appears to have been at least partly connected with his role in capturing a ship carrying tobacco in the Virginia Roads (USA).
His parents were Randall and Joan (Mason).
Nathaniel and Alice had three children at the date of his death, Mary, Joane and ???. Alice gave birth to a fourth child after his death who was also named Nathaniel.
It seems likely given the name, dates and location that the two Nathaniels were grandfather and grandson or at least fairly closely connected but I haven't been able to get back from 1700 or forward from the earlier Nathaniel.
I would be grateful if anyone can fill in anything in the gap.

Thanks for the input, folks.
However, I am a bit confused as to how he (Nathaniel 1623) could have been involved in the Battle of the Gabbard on 2 Jun 1653 when the Grant from Parliament was made to his widow on 15 April 1653.
Another source puts his death as during the Battle of Portland, 28 Feb - 2 Mar 1653 which would make more sense of the dates.

I've done some more digging and found that there were alternative spellings of the surname e.g. Chessen, Chesson, Chessun, and so on, and a couple of churches other than St Paul, Deptford e.g. St Nicholas Deptford and St Dunstan Stepney (which is where Captain Jesson was baptised, married and the childr Nathaniel of Alice and he , born after his death, was baptised), but still have a virtual blank between around 1655 and 1700.

Any help appreciated.

But it's the parents of Nathaniel Jesson c. 1700 which is the real sticking point in getting back.

There are plenty of Jessons in Leicestershire and the surrounding parts but the 1705 one in Deptford is a strong possibility instead of 1700 as I've only got an approximate birth date.
His wife was Elizabeth who died in 1783 in Deptford and the marriage may have been in 1733 in Shoreditch with the maiden name Phripp.
Looks like I will have to get up to the LMA and plough through their parish registers!
