Continuing from my last post 21st Aug, answer's I found very helpful, It appears Mary had 9 children, Joseph baptised November 1789, also Joseph and Elizabeth baptised July 8th 1792, then to make it more complicated there is an Elizabeth baptized January 7th 1798. I got a lot of the information from WWW. Portbury 100. It also appears that a Joseph Ashford died aged 28 in 1818 which would account for the one born around 1789. Did people have children with the same name's back then?? |

it seemed to be common practice back in the day that if a child died, the name would be given to the next child - my Dad, one of twelve children had a sister Nancy who died in infancy. When the next little girl was born all the children said "We've got another Nancy" and so Nancy she was called. He also had brothers called Harold and Harry |

i guess the lack of names , was due to the fact, that many could not read/write, so used brothers/sisters etc for the children. Also no TV/Radio, so they did not have access to other names. Should be easier for future genealogists, with all the unusual names now days., though with the families of to-day, probably several different fathers in family?? |
