I too have found some with no MMN. The ones I have found so far have all been illegitimate births.

Edit: Have now found some with no MMN that I am pretty sure were not illegitimate.

I have also found that searching after 1911, the full child's name is given, not just the first plus initials. Also, for searching in that period, using initials does not work. You have to use the first name and then search through the pages brought up. If a birth has already been found (eg on freebmd), use the first name plus the Reg district.

The snag that I have found is that Deaths seem unable to distinguish between months and years ........ the new images only show the age by a number


so a baby who dies at 6 months old (shown on the certificate) and a child who dies at age 6 years will both show on the new image as 6 ...................

it becomes important when finding children born and died between censuses.


Plus ................ mmn is NOT shown on every image of a birth registration.

I found a lot of mine without mmn, so was still unsure of whether I had the correct children, especially in families that all used the same forenames, over and over again.

My brother, photo taken in September 1991 just a couple of weeks before he died. ............................................................ To help us and to get better results, please post as much detail as you can, especially name, date(s) and place. Also say what you already know.

That's very interesting, Det. I wonder if they will continue the trial.

Might be useful to post that info on AustinQ's thread re the GRO Indexes - the more people who buy the PDFs may encourage them to continue.

According to Lost Cousins newsletter, there will be the option to buy digitalised copies for £6 from 9 Nov. Only a limited number of purchases will be available within the 3 week trial period.

The trial will last for only 3 weeks, but may close earlier (only 45,000 PDFs will be made available at this price). My guess is that those 45,000 PDFs will be sold very, very quickly -
Births: 1837 to 1934
Deaths: 1837 to 1957

I was hoping that the addition of MMN to the GRO Index would help to sort out these two:

Births Jun 1867
Lamport William Farnham 2a 93
Lamport William Farnham 2a 93

but this is what the GRO has:

Name:Mother's Maiden Surname:

LAMPORT, WILLIAM -
GRO Reference: 1867 J Quarter in FARNHAM Volume 02A Page 92 Occasional Copy: A
LAMPORT, WILLIAM BOWERS Order
GRO Reference: 1867 J Quarter in FARNHAM Volume 02A Page 93

The page Nos differ and has anyone any idea what "Occasional Copy:A" could mean?
