'Searches' for GRO Certificates

I'm interested to know exactly how the 'Searches' one can have done at the GRO are carried out?

I'm not talking about purchasing for example a birth certificate but the 'Search' where one pays the £9.25 fee and gives the details without the vol and page no., monies being refunded if the name isn't correct.

I'm interested to know who carries out the Searches and how reliable this method of searching is. I do know that I have been sent inaccurate certificates and monies refunded which isn't a problem, but obviously more so if the job hasn't been carried out properly, if at all. I suppose I worry that, dare I say it, students might be employed and the task not carried out properly before the monies are refunded!

Does anybody have experience of having a Search performed which is returned negative which later upon purchase turns out to be positive?

Only the GRO could tell you how they conduct the searches

Yes, I guess so, Shirley :-) And they wouldn't know if the job was done correctly all the time.. :-D
