What ???

Welcome to the boards, Karin.

Someone called Val, with username "coraiyo", has a thread on Ancestry, and has contributed to one on Rootsweb, about a family called McLeman (and other inter-related names) in Avoch, Ross-shire.

Is that relevant to you?

What does that mean Karin

If you need help with info you have to give details of who you are looking for and some idea of dates and area

PM from Karin -

Yes, she is my aunty and she has recently passed on. I joined Genes Reunited to try and find our family tree - MARSHALL of Tiverton Devon England. Any info would be most welcome. Thankyou.

Karin, thanks for your reply. I'm sorry to hear of your aunt's death.
However, we need more detail to go on - first names, years of births, marriages, deaths, etc. Basically, tell us everything you already know about your Marshalls (but remember not to post exact dates for anyone still living, as this is a public site).

For future replies, please type your message in the white box at the very end of this thread, below where it says "Add your reply", and then click "Submit". That way, all the helpers can see the information, and not just one person.

Also, it would be helpful to you if you edit the title of this thread to read "Marshall, Tiverton" - or something like that.

When was your aunt born? What were her parents' names?

I can see births of several Valerie Marshalls (assuming she was a Marshall) in Devon between 1938 and 1953.

If this is John (1806), and if he was indeed an only child, he certainly did his best to make up for it!

ArgyllGran Report 23 Mar 2017 21:47

Which particular line do you want to follow, Karin?

Which of those children of Thomas and Elizabeth is your direct ancestor?
Or do you not know?

Karin

Karin Report 23 Mar 2017 22:52

My Line is John Marshall 1806, son of Thomas Marshall and Elizabeth Cockram. My lineage is -

John Marshall 1806 married Mary Knight. They are the parents of
Samuel Knight Marshall 1834-1930 who married Janet Lumsden 1841-1908. Samuel Knight Marshall came to Australia. His son John Marshall 1865-1942 married Elizabeth Ann Black. His son Samuel Knight Marshall 1899 is my grandfather.

I am going to Tiverton Devon this year and I wanted to visit the township, cemeteries, take photos, visit the South West Heritage Centre, etc.

Any help with the ancestors from Tiverton would be much appreciated.

kind regards,

Karin

The 1851 census for John is the right one, in that case.

So as you know about John's descendants, I assume you're more interested in Thomas and Elizabeth's other children?

Maddie posted the 1851 re Robert (baptised 1817).
I don't see him in 1861 or later. Perhaps he died - there are a couple of possible deaths:

Deaths Dec 1852 (>99%)
MARSHALL Robert Tiverton 5b 294

Deaths Mar 1857 (>99%)
Marshall Robert Tiverton 5b 309

Karin

Karin Report 24 Mar 2017 10:53

Yes I am more interested in the other children. It looks as though William and Robert were twins, both born and baptized on the same days.

Thankyou for your help

Karin :-)

Re the baptism records for William and Robert :

A William and a Robert were baptised in 1816, and another one of each was baptised in 1817. However, if the two pairs had the same parents, then the second pair must have been twins, to be baptised so soon after the first pair, who presumably died in infancy.
