Hi I am trying to get the birth cert of my Grandfather ++++ he was born in 1690 Nicholas Mursell, Newport I have tried to get one on the Gov.co.uk sight but they only go back as far as the 1800.
Would anyone know if Birth Certs were around in the 1600 please Many Thanks

Birth certificates didn't come into being until 1837. Most people registered the births of their children from 1837 on but a few didn't bother until it became compulsory in (I think) 1875.
Before 1837 you will need to check for a baptism in parish records. Some areas have very full parish records, others are quite patchy. Have you tried www.familysearch.org? Quite a lot of parish records are digitised on there.
There are several places called Newport in the UK. Do you know which one you are looking for?
EDIT There are a lot of trees on GR that have Nicholas Mursell from Newport, Isle of Wight. Click on Search and then Search Member Trees. Then you can enter the name and date of Nicholas Mursell's birth and get a list of the trees that include him. You can then contact some of them and ask what information they have.

You do have to take into consideration that Parish Registers, if they haven't been lost, could have experienced all sorts of conditions.
Damp & mold, mice, insect infestation etc etc! That makes some of the entries totally illegible. Not all PR are available on line. Despite being encouraged to deposit them in an archive, some churches prefer to look after them themselves.
