Member Since: July 2010 Posts: 69 Send Message	I am trying to find out who John Prior married as from tree share I was given to believe it was a Rhoda Potter of feering Essex. John Prior born 1812 Copford Essex. I cant find any Rhoda Potter marriage to John though. First child born in 1835. I can only find 1 census record with Rhoda on and no records going back to her family. any help appreciated .

	Ancestry has a tree with him marrying Rhoda Wiseman at Feering on 18 Oct 1832.

	You would be able to confirm that with a visit to the Essex Record Office or subscribing to the SEAX site where you would be able to view the Feering marriages and download any you were interested in. SEAX subscription is £10 for 24 hours or £20 for a week. If you have a lot of Essex ancestors in your tree it can be worth it. 	The Ancestry tree (Merriday Family Tree) has census entries for Rhoda in 1841 at Layer Breton, and 1851, 1871 & 1881 all at Birch in Essex. There are several children: John, Jane Mary Ann, William, Eliza, James and Elizabeth.

	It could simply be that the vicar made a mistake when he filled in the marriage record. Probably the couple could not read so they would not have noticed the mistake. There were several Royces in Feering The Rhoda Prior in the censuses was definitely from Feering.

	This is the birth of son William who is on the 1851 census which gives mother's maiden name Wiseman:- PRIOR, WILLIAM WISEMAN GRO Reference: 1841 S Quarter in LEXDEN & WINSTREE UNION Volume 12 Page 130 EDIT :- also son James gives same mother's maiden name:- PRIOR, JAMES WISEMAN GRO Reference: 1849 J Quarter in LEXDEN AND WINSTREE UNION Volume 12 Page 61 Other children from the 1851 census also have births with Wiseman as mother's maiden name. I so appreciate the help you have all given me especially as I had spent 2 days trying to find out about Rhoda Potter and not Rhoda Wiseman :-)

	I have had a look at the image for the 18/10/1832 marriage and can confirm that Royce was a mistranscription. The vicar has spelt the surname as Proyer so that the P and r together look like R, and the 'er' at the end can be seen as 'ce'. That also applies to the witness Amelia Prior. Edit. I should have added that the bride, groom and witnesses did not sign, they just marked, the names having been written in by the vicar.
