The new UKTV prog where they are researching one particular house since it was built has made me want to do it with some houses that I remember. How do you search for a particular address in the census rather than a name? Sorry if it's simple but then so am I :-S

Although there are various ways of tackling it, a good place to start would be the 1939 register which an be searched by address.

Local historical ER, frequently held at the nearest library with a local studies section, can be searched in person. They may also have auction or sale notices if it’s a particularly large house. Archivists & Librarians can do this for you but for a fee per x minutes. Some ER are online on Ancestry & FMP. It depends where.

Look for newspaper entries for the people named on the ER in the British Newspaper Archives Online (FMP & GR). You might be able to pick up the people & house census. It’s possible that house numbers or names have been changed over time. It helps if there’s a pub, church or other building landmark ear by. That’d help to locate it.

The library might have old maps, & Street directories giving the occupation of the head of the house.

There are a number of internet search results using key words History of my house. Some of them can give you ideas.
