Hi,

I’m sorry if this is a stupid question, but is ordering a death certificate the only way to find out the cause and place of death?

Thanks.

Probably, unless the death is mentioned in news paper archives if there was an inquest, or in an obituary.

I would agree with Nyx.

The information on the certificate might not tell the whole story though.

My great grandfather was said to have died, whilst helping a fellow villager with some gardening. Neighbours carried him home and a doctor was called, who confirmed death.
Place of death is shown as his home address, as that is where death was confirmed.

Similarly, my father died suddenly on a day out in Southampton. His place of death is shown as the hospital, where the ambulance took him.

Sometimes, if their estate went to Probate, the entry might read ‘of (home address)’ who died at (somewhere else).

Older DC might have ‘Visitation of God’ as the cause of death. This was a term for natural but unexplained causes later attributed to a heart attack or stroke.
