Lesley, from 1884 some women were allowed to vote in local elections. It was usually owning property that was the qualification criterion. Not all men had the vote prior to 1918.

Hi Detective, I wasn't surprised that in 1915 they were all men, I was surprised that women such as my Grandma (normal folk) were allowed to vote as early as 1918. I hadn't realised that the transcripts were machine read. Thanks.

Alan - a pub called the North Pole on the street? :-S I would never have thought of that! What made you look in that direction.

Yep - your typical machine reader error

Name: Minnie Crighton
Year: 1918
County or Borough: Wandsworth
Ward or Division/Constituency: Wandsworth
Street address: 75 North Pole

As you will have seen from the image, its actually North Street. At least its half right :-D

Is this on Ancestry?

There's loads of transcription errors in the London Electoral Roll. That's because the images were read by a machine rather than a human being.

As for the 1915 roll - in the main, only males had the right to vote.

1918 - The Representation of the People Act is passed on 6 February giving women the vote provided they are aged over 30 and either they, or their husband, meet a property qualification.

I found my Grandad in London on the 1915 Electoral list - all men! On the 1918 my Grandma was there which surprised me. However the number of the house was correct, but instead of being the correct road, it was listed as 'NORTH POLE'. What the heck! Checked other ladies in the street and although their number/house seemed correct compared with their husband, their street was NORTH POLE! What is that about???
If you want to check it out my original search was for Mary Anne Taylor,20A Old Town, Clapham myGGmother North Pole
Minnie Crighton 75 North Street Clapham North Pole
Anna Louisa Northcott 181 Garratt Lane becomes 181 Florenc Ellen
Was a transcriber having a laugh at our ancestors expense? :-(
