When someone is adopted how do you enter it on a family tree and do you then research the adopted parents and add to the tree as if they were the birth parents.

There is no facility on GR to allow for adopted children.

I have added my grandfather twice.
He is added as a child to his biological family which includes his marriage and children. To this I added a note which refers to his adoptive family.

He is entered a second time, only as the son of his adoptive family with a note referring to his biological line.

It is advisable to add any marriage and descendants for the adopted person, to one set of parents only.

I use a desktop programme which does allow for adoption, and always update my tree by a gedcom.
Before exporting the gedcom, I need to ensure that my GF is disconnected from his adoptive parents as GR has no facility to handle the info.

You might have to 'marry off' one of the biological parents to the opposite gender adoptive parent.
Then, as ArgylGran says, add him as a child of the adoptive parents using their surname.

If you already have him added as a child of the adoptive parents, 'marry off' one of them to the biological parent.

If you only have say, the name of the biological mother, you'll have to add an unknown father. You can manual correct the child's surname to reflect his biological mother's.
