I have a cutting from a newspaper the source of which I am trying to trace.

The name of the paper has been cut and all there is is "THE GUARD", so one (ie I) immediately jump to the conclusion The Guardian, easy! But no. The paper dates from around 1925 at which time The Guardian was named "The Manchester Guardian". The article relates to events in / near Walthamstow.

So, has anyone any idea what it might be please?

I can't find a death registration for a John Victor in the London area, to add in the time period ............ only this one .........

Seems to be below Death...(that link posted looks about right, perhaps they have Archives?)...

Sylvia: I'm puzzled that you could not read the article, it's a 1.2M file which is quite readable when I download it from dropbox. Are you trying to view it on dropbox without downloading it perhaps?

He's an interesting character. I believe he was born John Joseph Adkin 1884, married Teresa Andrews and had 5 children with her, then - apparently - ran off and left her around 1912 and she and her children ended up in the workhouse. Teresa died in 1919.

He then seems to have changed his middle name to Victor and added an s to Adkin, perhaps to cover his tracks. I have not found a birth for John Victor Adkins. He then married Florence Maria Allen in 1914 and had 6 children with her.

The newspaper article suggests he "got into trouble" with a girl and as a result committed suicide in Walthamstow. This might mean that his bigamy (if that was what it was) had been discovered, or it might have been another woman.

One detail which tends to confirm this interpretation is the name of the brother in the article: Frederick William Adkins. John Joseph Adkin had a brother Frederick William Adkin.

Gwyn & Chris: the West Ham death is the right one.

And thanks for the link to Lloyd Park, Chris, I'm kicking myself that I hadn't spotted the William Morris connection when I was visiting London a few years ago (we did go to the Red House tho'), I'll put it on the list for the next time.

When I click on the drop box link the article comes up looking very small, but a box appears below it showing that it's at 15% size with + and - to click on to enlarge or reduce. Also an option to go full screen and then enlarge from there.

I didn't get that box below the article in the drop box link, and I don't download anything that is not directly concerned with my own research

To round off the thread, I contacted the Waltham Forest Local Studies Library and they confirmed it was from the Walthamstow, Leyton & Chingford Guardian for Friday 26th February 1926, page 9.
