Sorry David, but I think we are all getting confused. I thought "your" William married Sarah, not Ann and you said they married at All Saints, Newcastle, NOT All Saints Rothbury, which is completely different. There is an All Saints Church in very many towns in the country.

Since the death of William in 1838 was in South Shields which is where widow Sarah was living and South Shields is next to North Shields (where Earsdon is) the Earsdon birth is much more likely. Rothbury is much further north.

Kath.
My apologies Ann was a typo. William married Sarah Harper at All Saints. I don't know the area so assumed it was the same church.

Do we now think that "my" William is the Earsdon William?
What records do I now need to apply for?

Thank you
Dave

Hello again.
Thank you for all the information offered it's taken me a while to digest it all. I am waiting for a reply from the Records office about the 1838 death certificate (thank you SAFC) to see if there is anymore info on it that might help. The Whickham William Howie did marry a Sarah but as far as I can see only had one child (Jane 1822) so I think I can rule him out as my William had six children. William was 42 when he died according to the year of the death certificate 1838 so that rules out Haltwhistle William who would only have been 36yrs old at that time. I think my William has to be Earsdon William as he is the right age and in the right place. I will let you know what I can find out on the death certificate. Thanks again everyone for you help. Dave

I think the death certificate will help as it will hopefully give a relative as the informant and you will be able to match this up with a relative from the 1841 census.

I think you are right about the Earsdon William being the most likely.

Can I just point out that North and South Shields are in different counties, and on opposite sides of the River Tyne.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 24 Sep 2018 15:05

North and South Shields are on opposite sides of the Tyne but are still much closer to each other than to Haltwhistle.

I had relatives from North Shields and the family often moved back and forth between the two towns over the river.

Indeed, yes, of course, when compared with Haltwhistle.

The ferry has been in place for a long time. I used to regard using it as a treat when I was a child.

David Report 25 Sep 2018 00:03

I still have relatives living in North Shields.

David Report 2 Oct 2018 15:30

The 1838 death certificate has arrived today, it shows that William died at Lower Thames Street, Township of Westoe. It gives his occupation as keelman or wheelman? It gives his age as 42 years but unfortunately it does not give his place of birth, also the informant was not a family member (Amelia Sharp of Shadwell Street)

Because the address where he died is the same as where his wife Sarah was still living 3 years later I'm happy that this is "my" William.
Because he was 42 years old when he died he must have been born in 1796, as "Earsdon William" was the only one born in that year can I now say with confidence that I have found the correct person?

Again any help or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

KathleenBell Report 2 Oct 2018 23:58

Well, if it was my family, I would be happy enough to accept that "Earsdon William" was "my William"

Good luck with the rest of your research.

EDIT - I wonder if this is the same Amelia Sharp in the 1841 census. She is the only one I can find anywhere near to Westoe:-

Thank you I will now add "Earsdon William" to my tree and thanks to you I can now add his parents and their wedding date.

I have read that the informant is normally the spouse or a close family member, perhaps there is a link yet to be discovered or maybe Amelia was a good friend to the family but odd that she lived some 10 miles from South Shields.

Would you mind taking a look at just one more anomaly that I have found in the same family line?
Williams daughter Ann married Cuthbert Huntley, his parents were William Huntley 1801 and Ann Mills 1806. Now this is were I'm having a problem. The 1841 census shows them with 3 children and states that Ann was born 1806 however the 1861 census shows them with 8 children but states that Ann was born in 1802, also 2 of their original children (William and Elizabeth) are showing as having a different birth year. Am I confusing two family's? if not, which one in your opinion is Ann's correct year of birth. I can find no record of the family in 1851.
Thanks again. Dave x

Thank you Maddie.
My last post was the wrong way round, should have read....1841 with 8 children and 1861 with 3 children. Are they the same family? Why is Ann's, William's and Elizabeth's birth year different in the two census? and which one's are correct?

Also the names you have posted with the GRO references, are they showing that person's middle names? i.e. Joseph Carton, Cuthbert Mills, Annie Isabella, Alfred Mills and Elizabeth Miles.
Sorry if I am a pain but I am learning slowly.

the 1841 census explaination

1841 was the first time that the head of each household was given a form to fill in on behalf of everyone in the dwelling on a set day. This system still forms the basis of the method used today.

Of course, illiteracy was high in 1841, and anyone unable to read or write would have made use of an enumerator - a literate person who would be collecting the census forms - to help fill in the details. Because of this, however, you may note mistakes that were made, such as name spellings. It should also be noted that many people were often economical with the truth when it came to their ages.

Note: In the 1841 Census there was also a policy of rounding down ages was in place. As such, people aged:

15-19 were recorded as 15
20-24 were recorded as 20
25-29 were recorded as 25
30-34 were recorded as 30

Thank you that post explains everything. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this thread and helped to solve my initial query.
Kath.
Because you found William's parents I have now been able to find 5 of Williams siblings. I am learning more and more each day but I'll probably be back with another problem soon :-D x

Thank you all

Kind regards
