Which family tree sites do you reccomend

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 15 Sep 2018 13:47

Do you mean sites on which to research and find records - such as Ancestry or FindMyPast?

Or do you mean sites on which to build and add to your tree?

Or programmes (as opposed to websites) to download, and on which to build your tree?

Thank you for the reply I need sites to build and add my tree

Trees on Genes & Findmypast are 'private'. With Ancestry you have to opt out of your tree being public.
All 3 sites give you 'hints' to help with your research.

My Heritage & Familysearch both have tree building facilities although I'm not sure if you can make them 'private'. Nor am I aware if they give you 'hints' to the records they hold.

Personally, although I have my tree(s) on Ancestry, I also have a 'master' version on my own PC. That way all data has been transcribed & is available off-line in case other subscriptions lapse.

How did you do a master version ?? the others you mention we have to pay for except family search I do have the F.T.M 2014 which is in a mess at the moment thats why I need to start again

I have FamilyTreeMaker2005 - an old version but is easy to use and I just add to it when I find anything new.

Like yours, its an offline tree programme. Not FTM but a different brand. They both do the same thing.

As I'm not familiar with FTM, can't advise specifically. As its linked to Ancestry, can you down load a GEDCOM from there & open as a new tree? Has the Ancestry tree got in a mess as well?

If you're not subscribing to Ancestry, there's nothing to stop you starting a new version off line using your current programme, Start with the bits you know are correct & build from there

If your Ancestry tree includes records and images you should really save them as well as the GEDCOM.

Kathleen I have the 2005 version as well whci ive always liked on my pc but the ancesters dont go back in order as the spellings of the surnames are different what do you suggest I make them all the same ???

Kense Report 17 Sep 2018 16:51

To save the records and images you can get FTM 2017 or later and synch it to you Ancestry tree. That will ensure that most of the tree is downloaded to your PC (comments and notes might not be). You can then back up your FTM tree to a USB drive,

Th alternative is to work through the records and images one by one and save them using Ancestry's save facility, to a folder on your PC. Then copy that folder to your USB drive.
