They appear to have been in court together.

Any information would be really appreciated. It is about time I found a bit of scandal in my family. :-D

Both charged with assault on a peace officer, along with a further 8 individuals, no other details on the record that I can see. 6 of which were found not guilty.

They are listed on the record as Sr. and Jr. The offence was assault on a Peace Officer. A total of 10 people were charged with the same offence. The Whitfields were each given 1 month imprisonment and fined £5.

The younger was charged with assaulting George Moore, police constable at Brinkworth.
13 October 1842 - Devizes and Wiltshire Gazette - Devizes, Wiltshire, England

The elder was involved at the same time.
The constable was keeping an eye on a house which had previously been on fire when he found both the Whitfield’s.
The elder said he was looking to get his pipe lit, although he had no pipe, then that he was looking for his walking stick despite having one in his hand.
The younger said he was looking for a gammon of bacon even though he didn’t live close by nor been authorised to be there.

After some remonstration, Whitfield sir left the house, followed by the constable. They were met by the son who hit him on the head, pushed him down & hit him on the head again. PC Moore managed to get away but was chased. When ‘some persons’ came his way, he was able to detain Whitfield Jr.

Whitfield Snr (described as a farmer) participation was not only threatening language but also by holding his walking stick over the PC who he was about to strike if the ‘blow had not been arrested’

The newspaper said that Whitfield Snr got 1 month hard labour plus £5 fine & Whitfield Jr, 3 months.
Slightly at odds with the Criminal Register.

What a pair of chancers! I have a couple of black sheep at last.

Most of my lot are law abiding, even lay preachers, so this is a turn up.
