Genealogy Chat

I looked on Ancestry, but all their researchers seem to be in the USA, whereas I need help in London.

I'm trying to find information about my husband's maternal grandfather, Arthur Leopold Hughes, who worked for Maples of London from c 1901, and was certainly still with them in December 1932. For many years he was a manager based in Buenos Aires, connected to their timber production; I have found records of him sailing between England and Argentina from 1909 to 1932. His wife Amelia nee Collins is in the 1939 register living with their daughter Dorothy (Lloyd) and family; she is shown as married, which implies he is still alive then (though I know this is not definitive).

The V&A Archive and Library Study Room, which is located at Blythe House, 23 Blythe Road, Olympia, London, W14, holds the Maple and Co Staff record book, which includes name, ages, date of employment, department and remarks, 1894-1945, so I would like to find someone to visit Blythe House to see if they can find any more information about him.

Any advice on how to find a researcher to look into this for me would be very much appreciated.

Gives a map and 'find a researcher' search, ( just put London) there are several in London. Others in Surrey who would probably travel in.

not surprised to see that Ancestry's researchers are mostly in the UK ..... they ARE an American company, based in Utah.

FindMyPast would be the English genealogy company to check ...... they're the sister company of GR.

Yes thank you, I do already have such information, all except his death. I'm hoping the employment records might at least show how long he worked for Maples. The last record I have is his sailing back to Argentina in December 1932 (the first being in 1909).

Have you tried asking the V&A? They must have an archivist

I have bitten the bullet and asked a professional genealogist to visit the V&A to see what she can find for me.
