Where have you found the information you give, please? I've looked on Ancestry, FS, and irishgenealogy.ie, without finding a William with those details

Thanks, Maddie.
Working back through the censuses - he married Mary Jane Gilfillan in 1840 in the Gorbals, Glasgow.
GILFILLAN MARY JANE WILLIAM MCEWAN/FR1309 (FR1309) 17/04/1840 644/2 70 258 Gorbals
Parish record does not name his father. Where did you find his father's name, Max?
Births of the children from 1851 census as proof of right marriage:
MCEWAN ANDREW WILLIAM MCEWAN/MARY GILFILLAN FR600 (FR600) M 29/12/1844 652/ 20 501 Old Monkland or Coatbridge

1861 says Mary was born New Galloway, Kirkcudbrightshire (about 2 miles from Balmaclellan). 1871 says "Balance Cillan", Kirkcudbright. 1881 says Balmaclellan. Can't see her birth.
ADDED:
William's death cert says his father's name was John, deceased, and his mother was Rebecca McEwan, ms Brown, deceased.
MCEWAN WILLIAM 71 1887 701/ 15 WEST CALDER
Died 9.30am, 7 Feb 1887, at 14 Earl Street, [something ], West Calder. Married to Mary Gilfillan. Cause of death: dropsy. Informant: Robert McEwan, son.
A tree on Ancestry says his father's name was Andrew, but offers no proof to refute the death cert info.
I can't find John & Rebecca's marriage.

I don't know where they are getting John and Rebecca's ages from. Can't find their births, deaths or marriage in Ireland. Perhaps they're just guessing.
They also have the wrong marriage date and place for William. No William McEwans married in Bothwell in 1840.
One tree ("My Ryan Family Tree" ) has the correct marriage, but says his father John was born in Maybole, Ayrshire - which seems unlikely, and no proof is offered, though I suppose it's not impossible.
One ( Wallis family tree) has the correct marriage, but gives his father's name as Joseph - no proof.
One says Rebecca was born in 1826 - ten years after she gave birth ?!
One has seized on an 1871 census for an Edinburgh family with parents John & Rebecca McEwan, and therefore given William a lot of completely wrong siblings.
If you're taking your info from other people's trees, Max, be aware that they are largely untrustworthy. People often don't check actual records, but only guess, or copy wrong stuff from other people.
