Kaufering is a municipality in the district of Landsberg in Bavaria in Germany. It lies on the Lech River. During World War II, a subcamp of Dachau concentration camp was located there. KZ-Friedhof Leitenberg is situated in Dachau. It is also refered to as KZ-Friedhof auf der Leiten.
Between February and April 1945 8 mass graves were dug at Leitenberg and 4318 dead prisoners were buried in these graves because the capacity of the crematorium was unable to deal with the numbers dying in the overcrowded concentration camp of Dachau.
During the liberation of the concentration camp of Dachau on April 29th 1945 US Soldiers discovered another 2000 dead prisoners and these were also buried in two additional mass graves on the Leitenberg.
In the sixties the bavarian government closed other concentration camp cemeteries and relocated about 1200 dead to this cemetery.
Today 7439 prisoners lie buried in this cemetery.
