Please could someone help me. My relative Charles Chorley was Master of this workhouse between Jan 1898 and August 1899 (as written on his workhouse service record). I have looked up Glendale Union Workhouse and it says that Glendale Union Workhouse was taken over by Glendale Rural district Council in 1894. My problem is, was there another Glendale Workhouse? If not then why did his service record show him working there. His wife Ada Chorley was the matron there. Any help appreciated. Thanks Jane |

I dont know if this will help you or not but there was a workhouse in Belford, Northumberland. Belford is the nex largest township of any size north of Wooler.(the main town of Glendale). Belford may then have been in the Glendale district or Berwick district. I should think genuki will be able to help you re districts. I hope this is the one you are looking for because a history of Belford workhouse was published last year. Kept. |

Thanks everyone for your replies. Perhaps you are right Kim, lets hope so. Pauline and Snowdrops. I have visited that web page and as you say it does give you lots of information. It was this information about Glendale Workhouse that started all my problems. Kept you may be right the only thing is that in the Guardians minutes it states he came from Wooler. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you all. Thanks for all your help Jane |

The next Master of the Glendale Workhouse was AIDAN (OR AIDEN) HEALY a Pensioner Colour Sergeant Infantryman. You can find him in both the 1901 and 1911 Censuses. So it seems to have continued as a Workhouse and as another respondent suggests, be paid for by the local authority, rather than be actually managed by them. |
