My husband's grandfather was at the Infant orphan asylum in Essex and I had a lot of help from the archivist there. He also had a sister at the London Orphan Asylum in Watford - apparently it was unusual for more than two children from one family to attend the same orphanage, so they were shared out with other existing orphanages. If you are lucky there may be candidates books in the archive from which you can trace the personal history of each child. Of course the one we wanted had gone astray, but the archivist was still able to give us a lot of information, including anything relevant to him found in committee minutes such as grants towards travel expenses and books for future employment and studying etc. The London Orphan Asylum archive is kept at the Surrey County Record office - according to the letter I received re the Infant Orphan Asylum - which is where you will find these candidate books. I haven't got round to contacting them myself yet. I will email you the contact numbers I was given. Sheila

Hi Jean & Helen, The Orphanage was in Orphanage Road, very close to where Watfortd Junction Station is. Helen, Watford FC is on the corner of Vicarage Rd and Occupation Road. Think maybe you've muddled Occupation and Orphanage, lol :)) Hertford Record Office at County Hall will have the records you need, if they still exist. Many workhouse records don't. Debbie (nr Watford)

From the internet: http://www.christophereimer.co.uk/single/8446.html The London Orphan Asylum had been founded by the Rev Andrew Reed (1787-1862). He was the son of a watchmaker in Smithfield, who had come to London from Dorset. Following his education in Islington, he went into his father's business before entering the Ministry and becoming pastor of the New Road Chapel for some fifty years, eventually becoming the founder of no less than five of London's great philanthropic institutions. On 16 January 1825, the Duke of Cambridge performed the official opening of the London Orphan Asylum. However, in 1866 an outbreak of typhoid prompted the orphanage to seek new accommodation and it eventually moved to Watford in 1870.

Searching for ARTHUR H JONES in 1881 He was born in 1869 but is not with his family. I have found an ARTHUR JONES in the LONDON ORPHAN ASYLUM WATFORD. his Fathur had died not long before but his Mother and other siblings still at the family home. Entered in the 1881 census as just Arthur Jones but place of birth correct as Westminster and age also. Sorry to be so longwinded my question really is where can I find further information etc? I cant find anything on the watford site. Anyone with any ideas? Jean
