Listening to Workers Playtime on the radio at lunch time. Round the Horn on Sundays! Using brasso to polish the window handles until they shone like gold. Dad getting up early in the winter to light the fire so us kids could stand shivering in front of it putting on our clothes. Saturday morning pictures with the worn old films that often broke down and the kids who were going to the loo being silouetted against the screen and getting a slow clap. Mum paying into the toy shop a few bob every week all year so we could have xmas pressies. Lying on the floor to hide when the rent man came and mum didnt have the money to pay him. Collecting Robinsons "gollies" off the jam jars to send off for a brooch (totally non-pc now) Teachers who threw chalk at kids or slapped their legs for running in the corridor not being sued for assault.

Does anyone remember "paper nylon" petticoats in the sixties? When you washed them you had to rinse them in sugar and water so that they stayed stiff. Out on the washing line the flies and wasps loved them!

i hope so much you have all been watching "the lost world of mitchel and kenyon the last 3 fridays on tv...lod films of life in 1900..priceless to see..i watched and vidiod them and cant stop looking ..shows so much of how life was ..hoss muck in streets..old trams...people smoking like mill chimneys..and yes..smoky mills and houses...how ever did anyone survive>>:)

Little girls all in white for Whitsun, (about the only new clothes i remember getting, and i hated them). The first bought (rather than made up) bike amongst your friends, sitting under the cross bar on a friends dads work bike (If i'd caught mine doing anything like that i'd have killed them) and trying to race the cars and busses. Yes i was a tomboy and had the cuts, bumps and bruises to show for it. Wearing wellies to school and having bright red rings round mylegs where they rubbed. Accepting that all clothes were passed down and not knowing different. Jumping on a hot water bottle and scalding my feet when it burst (my brother said it would make me bounce)

Afternoon folks, (love this thread!), Can anyone remember 'Playstix'?... we had Lego, Betta Builda and Meccano, but I loved Playstix! they were similar to Sticklebricks, and came in different colours, you can't get them now, I used to play with them for ages, and The Magic Robot game!... :)

Had to get this back to the head of the board, I can't stop remebering things Who remembers that plastic liquid stuff that you blow up with a straw to make ballons. And the hobbys we had. Mine was Match boxes I think I had some were around 250, with a full set of Ship matches, from the little 1d box right up to the house hold one. I was also in to Aerfix models WW2 air craft had dozens of them untill I was about 11 Then blow them all up with fireworks.Boy was I stupid!!!! I shudder to think of the thing I did that involved Bangers and 1d rockets.

We used to make "banger guns" - a bit of metal tube, pop in a lighted banger then a stone and then aim. Flying Imps - place on a smooth surface, light then retire immediately - use to fly off in random directions; I don't think they sell those any more. Or Aeroplanes, Jumping Jacks etc.

Being younger than some who have posted on this board (pounds, shilling and pence had just departed when I was born!), it's been a fascinating read. However, I was sitting here earlier with the children and found myself thinking what c**p kids TV is today compared to when I was younger. I used to love Pipkins, Magpie, Chorlton and the Wheelies, Jamie and the Magic Torch, Rainbow, Magic Roundabout, Andy Pandy....the stuff they churn out these days can't even come close to competing with those programmes. The 3 main programmes directed at young children are just people dressed up in suits making a prat of themselves! Noddy has made a huge comeback lately though and I'm nearly 3 year old adores him. But the Golliwog has gone (non PC)!

REAL candles on the xmas tree!!! Remember getting Lyons syrup tins and making holes in the bottom, then threading string through?.....you held the string and stood on the tins......STILTS Collecting fag packets.... park drive...kensitas...woodbine...weights...No6...loads more... I wish I could remember the skipping and twoball songs... one a penny 2 a penny 3 a penny....drop one! in n out the dusty blue bells....eevy ivy over! another game....plate ona stick I used to make my own hooped petticoat using wire coat hangers lol Great thread Gerri x

I said exactly the same today to hubby about kids t.v programmes our youngest glued to it all crap and repeated all day long,did see other day they are making a Magic roundabout film that was my fav as a child and clangers remember it driving my mum mad!! Just been thinking about things my gran would do remember her baking bread,and cakes on a saturday to last the week never used scales just put it in big brown mixing bowl,then any veg ect left over from sunday roast would be put in frying pan next day and made bubble and squeek and always remember my iron being low when pregnant with my eldest (20 yrs ago) would make me drink the cabbage water yuk!! but worked Also the big net peticoats people have mentioned well they are still very popular today along with full skirts ect hubby is in a rock n roll band and amazing how many jivers go to these gigs in their skirts and peticoats had better go or be here all night Karin

Just to say Kim you have started something here my daughter read some of things and told teacher at school about it she now wants it printed off to show the class as learning history even going to national history museum in May and will offer to be a helper Karin

Just had to add to this thread Vinegar dripping out of the bottom of your chips wrapped in a newspaper on a winters night! Hugh, Pugh, Barney Magrew, Cuthbert, Dibble and Grub! And what about 'Tales from Europe' - a childrens programme from different countries so it was dubbed. One of them was called - The Singing, Ringing Tree - that was really scary! Playing in the snow until you couldn't feel your feet and could barely walk home. Sometimes three feet deep and stayed for weeks. Top of the Pops LP's that weren't sung by the real groups so you were really disappointed when you played it on your record player! Endless summers playing outside. Could go on and on and on ........ What about our teens. I tryed to get in to the "Hippy culture" But it was'nt the same at 13ish. But I did have a Pink flower shirt ( SAD) and flared jeans and I was aloud to grow my hair down past my shoulders. But there was also the Mods and Rockers befor that, Me I was a Rocker you ask my mate, our bikes were the Bees knees (Push bikes that is)

What else annoys me of today is the music gone of the days of decent stuff my kids listen to a right load of junk same beat and cant hear a word thats being sung otherwise its an oldie re done and they wonder how how the hell you know the words!! Kazzie(Karin)

I remember my dad making me stilts out of old SMA tins, also does anyone remember HR Puff n Stuff. I remember my brother watching Chorlton and the Wheelies and Clopper Castle. My favourite was watching Dr. Who (with Jon Pertwee of course) and the Daleks through spread fingers from behind the settee. Andrea

Bit more to add, Going to my Grans and eating pressed meat she'd done herself,and loving it until i went one time and i saw her boiling a sheeps head. VERY careful what i had after that. If it wasn't tinned meat i wouldn't have a sandwich. I have an uncle who still loves to eat tripe and cow heels. thinking it was great to have a bath and look out of gran's kitchen window at the same time, until i realised if i could see out then they could see in.... Exploring her dressing up box and finding 'real pearls' and 'the Queens lost crown'. Losing my pants whilst paddling when we went to Weston super Mare, worst of all was gran asking everyone nearby if they'd seen them. The toffee factory on Saturday mornings, you could watch them make the toffee AND get a bag of toffee bits for 'nowt' if the right people were there. Asking a friend what beef burgers and yoghurt were. Getting a paper round at 13 and having to give half my 'wages' to my mother. Did i have it bad? Joan

What about doing maypole dancing on May day I remember doing that at junior school then there was country dancing and once a year would go to another school for a big competition Pippa dolls me and friend would cut scraps of material to make clothes for them,making pompoms to hang from a babies pram.not to mention putting a loads of baby milk spoons together to make a toy my kids have said you must have all found it boring back then?boring I cant ever remember being bored as achild always plenty to do,kids have to easy today!!
