Oh my goodness that is a lot to have to deal with and on his own too.
How on earth did he cope with it all?

My Grandad was badly gassed at the 2nd battle of Ypres and got sent back here just before the whole of Ypres was destroyed. When he got back his daughter aged 7 died and just over a year later his wife died of the Spanish Flu. His brother was also missing and later was listed dead in France.

My Dad had said that Granddad had shrapnel in his but not which part and that at some point in Dads life he managed to squeeze it out when it became infected and the record said he was a casualty so that's good enough for me :-D.

We all wish that I am sure. I wish I had known what Grandad went through as I always thought he was just a miserable old git. My cousin had information of where he served and what he went through in the army and also personal tragedy bless him.

Well I have got as far as I'm going to get thanks to you for your help, its one of the situations where I wish I had asked my Dad more questions years ago.

Ok good luck

ZZzzz Report 30 Jan 2023 20:09

It was Forces War Records, I'm going to look at Ancestry now.

LaGooner Report 30 Jan 2023 20:00

You could look where his unit was at the date he was serving. Where did you find his records? if it was Ancestry look at the notes on the bottom of the record which might tell you.

I have found him thanks, next question, is there anywhere I can get where he actually went / was sent during his time?

Just thought I am not sure the Long Long Trail would help you but a very interesting site.

ZZzzz Report 30 Jan 2023 18:46

Ancestry, Forces War Records and Long long Trail

ZZzzz Report 30 Jan 2023 18:36

Where would be a good place to start looking? So far I have only thought of Findmypast.

Good luck with that as loads of them were destroyed by fire due to a bomb on the records office in WW2.My Grandad's were amongst them methinks as there are no trace of them.

ZZzzz Report 30 Jan 2023 17:42

That reminded me to look for my Granddads WW1 record.

Just back from the school run and now my time is my own :-D :-D. I finished the research for the Archive so I will now get the JCB out and do some more work on the WW2 soldiers that I keep trying to get on with.

ZZzzz Report 30 Jan 2023 15:44

I'm doing some ironing at the moment. :-D

LaGooner

LaGooner Report 30 Jan 2023 14:59

ZZzzz Report 30 Jan 2023 14:45

No nothing serious at all, hubby too wobbly and me feeling sick, the anti sickness tablets not working today. :-|.
Back to doing the ironing for me.

Or maybe get the JCB out again.
