SO WHO ARE THE BARBARIANS?

The Barbarian Football Club, also known as the “The Barbarians” or the “Baa-Baas”, is a Rugby Union Club based in Britain.
It’s members are rugby union players from countries and clubs throughout the world.

The Membership is by invitation and the qualification considered when issuing an invitation is the standard of a player's skills.

The only other additional qualification is the rugby player’s good conduct and reputation on and off the pitch.
Being asked to become a Barbarian is an honour.
Traditionally at least one uncapped player is selected for each match.

The Barbarians bring together players from different clubs to play a few matches each year to enjoy the camaraderie of the game and play attacking, adventurous rugby without the pressure of having to win....... But believe you me......

THE BARBARIANS REALLY WANT TO WIN!
And they will take NO PRISONERS! :-D

Past UK and Irish players include Wales’ legends-
GARETH EDWARDS, GERALD DAVIES, PHIL BENNETT and CLIFF MORGAN.

This year, Wales former Tight Head Prop (no. 3)ADAM JONES, who has retired from International Rugby Union, won 2 Caps for The Barbarians.

Other notable past players are former England Players- BILL BEAUMONT, JEREMYGUSCOTT, JASON LEONARD and DAVID DUCKHAM;
Scotland’s ANDY IRVINE; Irish players JACK KYLE and MIKE GIBSON.

Big names from around the world who played for The Barbarians include Australia’s DAVID CAMPESE, New Zealand’s ZINZAN BROOKE, South Africa’s FRANCOIS PIENAAR and France’s PHILIPPE SELA.

The Barbarians have a distinctive strip- Black and white shirts and black shorts.
What is a very appealing tradition of the Baa-Baas, is that the players wear the socks of their own Clubs.

I will look forward to seeing more Barbarian matches, and you never know ..... maybe some of our Wales Boys<3 that didn't quite make it into the National Team for the World Cup will be invited to play! :-) :-) :-)

BARBARIANS 27 ~ SAMOA 24

Yesterday afternoon, the Barbarians played Samoa at the Olympic Stadium in London. This was the first ever rugby match to be played here.

This served as a Rugby World Cup Warm-Up match for the Samoan Team, and it was certainly good practice!

TEAMS:

Yesterday’s Barbarian side was predominantly made up of Southern Hemisphere players, although some of these do play for UK Clubs.
These included 13 International Players- 3 Springboks, 7 Wallabies and 3 New Zealand/ Samoan Players.

I did notice a Scottish International Replacement- Kyle Traynor, a Prop for Scotland and Bristol.

THE MATCH:

Before the match began, The Samoans entertained the crowds with a haka-style traditional dance.

The game got underway, and at 5 minutes into the game Adam Thomson for The Barbarians had scored a Try, but the Conversion was missed.
Shortly afterwards, the Samoans had their first Try which was converted, putting them into the lead.

HANDBAGS!

At 17 minutes there was an incident which needed to be sorted out via the TMO.
The decision was that The Barbarian’s Hooker, Saia Fainga’a, was holding on to Samoan number 5, Kane Thompson.

Thompson retaliated with a RIGHT HOOK!

So it was a YELLOW CARD for The Barbarian’s Fainga’a but A RED CARD for Thompson!

This meant 10 minutes in the Sin-Bin for the Barbarian, but the end of the match for the Samoan!

For 10 minutes it was 14 players a-piece, but at the end of the 10 minutes, it was 15 players v 14 players!

SURPRISE SHOWER!

A surprise for all on the field came at 25 minutes when suddenly....
....THE SPRINKLERS CAME ON!
There was water spraying everywhere! I hope it doesn’t happen during the World Cup!

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/barbarians-v-samoa-sprinklers-activate-during-olympic-stadiums-first-rugby-match-ahead-of-world-cup-a2923851.html

DOUBLE TROUBLE!

Two of the Barbarians made me laugh!
A tactic I have not seen before!
One of the Barbarians was running with the ball, with a second Barbarian holding on to him from behind and running with him!
It would have given added power to plough through any tacklers coming their way!

RESPECT

The Samoans have earned my respect!
They played a phenomenal game, with one player short, through most of the match. They held their own with the much larger and seemingly physically stronger Barbarians!

In fact, another Samoan was given a yellow card, about 7 minutes from the end of the game, and so it was 15 players to 13 for the remainder!

It was a very close game to the very end, with The Barbarians just beating Samoa by only 3 points!
