It is annoying when people promise to call you back and don’t Florence, I hope they call today.
I went for a hearing aid appointment on Sunday afternoon, to try and get my phone set up,so I could use the streaming. It was a new audiologist and she hadn’t got a clue. She managed to mess up the connection for my left hearing aid and couldn’t get it back. She needed to call the technical department, but of course they don’t work on Sundays, so she promised to call me back yesterday. I said that I couldn’t hear through my right ear and when she checked, she said it was ninety percent full with wax. The previous girl would have just taken it out, but apparently they don’t do wax removal anymore. I have made an appointment with a different firm, but can’t get it until next Tuesday, so will have to be deaf until then.

Anyway, as the girl had messed the settings up, I uninstalled the app again and reinstalled it and paired the hearing aids again. This time the streaming option appeared and I managed to get it working. I did exactly the same things I had done the previous two times, so why it suddenly decided to work, I have no idea. I rang her up and left a message telling her that I had sorted it out, It was mid afternoon by the time she rang back and she hadn’t done anything by then

I have been for a litterpick walk this morning , it never gets any better.

Good evening all
Its windy again and on Wed another bad storm set to hit the west coast with 75 mph winds! Just never ending at the moment.

I had 2 visitors today who helped me put my mind at rest over a couple of things and i feel so much better now. If I need their help, they have offered assistance in any way they can, such a relief.

Anyway they enjoyed my fruit loaf I made on Sunday afternoon after my neighbour went. We had a good laugh during the visit which is always a good thing. Daughter had put one of these long hot water bottles under her nightshirt before she arrived and was only when i turned to look at her, i thought she had suddenly developed an enormous spare tyre :-D :-D :-D

When i asked her what was under the nightshirt, she showed me and my neighbour burst out laughing as it had caught her eye but was too polite to say anything :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

But we all then had a jolly good laugh as she did look funny!!

Waited all day for a call back from solicitor and she never rang grrr. So annoying when they promise to call back and dont!

So a fairly quiet day in all really.

Hope everyone else is ok

Oops.

Some of the Dove gluten free (freee) bread recipes use an alternative for eggs, it might be worth looking through their other recipes to see if they do to.

The one I just checked uses 20 grams of chickpea flour and 40 mls of water instead of 2 eggs.

Yes page 72 I made a chicken chow mein on NYE(sat) and was ill Sunday evening!

Florence61 Report 4 Feb 2023 21:52

Names, im severely allergic to eggs and butter so no cant make pan cakes.

It is a bit of a puzzle but I shall stick to my normal diet for now and no takeaways or soy sauce.

I shall have the salmon again at some point as I have been eating that for years.

AG, yes the chow mein i made was using a packet of chow mein sauce plus my own soy sauce and i did get a headache.

I do have a sensitive stomach, always have, so maybe plain and simple is best.

So to test if is the gum you need to make something with the plain flour and no gum.

Pancakes? (I've not tried this recipe from the glutenfree blogger)
300ml semi-skimmed milk
2 large eggs
100g plain gluten free flour
A knob of butter (approx 15g)

Place the crêpe pan (or non-stick frying pan) on a low heat and add the butter. Heat until melted then turn off the heat.
Add the milk, flour and eggs to a mixing bowl or large jug. Pour in the melted butter (don't worry about wiping out the pan as this will help grease it for the pancakes) and use a whisk to beat the mixture together until it forms a smooth batter and there are no lumps.
Heat the pan on a medium heat and once hot, add a ladle-full of the batter. Move the pan around until the whole surface is covered and leave for 1-2 minutes. Once the edges start to loosen, use a spatula to gently lift them until the whole pancake is lose and you can move it around the pan.
Next be brave! Either use your best pancake-tossing skills (or a spatula!) to flip the pancake over. Cook for another minute before serving onto a plate. Top straight away with your favourite toppings!

It's a puzzle!

Looking back at the first time you were sick (page 72) - that was while you had the headache, which came on after you'd had home-made chicken chow mien the previous evening.

Maybe this time your system just bypassed the headache!

Allergies and intolerances can start at any time - even if the culprit hasn't previously caused any problem.

Florence61 Report 4 Feb 2023 17:37

Oh yes names, you are correct. The first scones were made with plain flour. The pizza was with self raising flour and Xanthum gum used both times too so possibly the flour then or the gum?

nameslessone

nameslessone Report 4 Feb 2023 16:55

Which leaves us with the gluten free flour and xanthum gum.
Xanthum gum is usually added to the gf self raising flour so if you have had problems after using both plain AND self raising it is more likely to be one of the grains they use to make the flour.

We don’t buy own brand gf biscuits ( even though they are soooo much cheaper) as OH has had real problems with many of them. They claimed that oats are not involved ( he can’t tolerate them) and we don’t believe them. Sadly most biscuits do now seem to have oats included.

Afternoon folks
AnnG, that museum of the Police sounded very interesting, def the kind of place I would have enjoyed looking around and the court too.

£16 for a bar of soap!! Quite laughable but then again it's from Highgrove so I guess what you would expect to pay from there. Glad you have a lovely day out though.

Now I have looked back at my posts re my sickness etc. The first time i was ill, the day before i had made the gluten free scones. The salmon was after that. But I have been making the salmon for years and it has never made me sick so I dont think actually, the soy sauce was the culprit. I said a take away gave me a bad headache twice and that it could have been the sauce but i was never sick.

This time. I had eaten the gluten free pizza and then the salmon.

So I actually think it was the scones first and then the pizza both gluten free.

So Im giving gluten free a wide birth and stick to my normal. It was just because daughter is g/f just now and wanted to cut down on different breads, cakes etc.

When I lived elsewhere, there were 4 of us in the house and i used to cook 4 different meals most night and was quite happy too. I am a veggie /meat free, milk free, egg free. Ex ate most meats, son chicken only, daughter all meats. As long as I had 4 empty plates it didn't matter as no waste.

Anyway. Im ok today, shame our weather is still wet and horrid.

But I have a bigger problem to deal with and shall post on a separate thread.

Hope everyone else having a good weekend so far

good morning all. Sorry you were unwell again Florence. that does sound like an intolerance. Two possibilities with what you had eaten the 1/4 tsp xanthan gum in the pizza mix and the soy sauce, check the ingredients in the latter Anyway glad you recovered ok but not nice to suffer with that.

I had a really good day yesterday. Went with friends to Tetbury (Near Highgrove). There were 7 of us. after a good coffee stop when we first got there (about a 45 minute journey), we went to the free Police museum. It sounds boring but it was really well done and very interesting. It is situated in the old Tetbury Victorian police station. It is not very big but they have a huge collection of all sorts of things like uniforms, truncheons, handcuffs through the ages, who knew there had been so many different ones? then there were photos and also upstairs a whole room set out as a magistrates court, with life sized figures and a recorded hearing.

After the museum (we had only paid for 3 hours parking and we do chat such a lot as we go so time is important), we walked through the town. A small group went to see the Highgrove shop but didn't buy anything. Apparently a bar of scented soap was £16, We walked back to near where we had parked the car as we wanted to go into the Parish church of St Mary's the 186 foot church spire is the fourth largest in England.

It’s thought to be one of the oldest places of worship in Gloucestershire, being founded in the 7th century by King Ethelred of Mercia. He ordered for a monastery called ‘Tette’s monastery’ to be built on 15 acres of land. Although none of the original monastery is left today, St Mary's is a medieval church on the same site that was built in the 12th century.
Following that, the huge church spire was added in the 14th century. Over the years, there have been many improvements made but the church spire and tower have remained a constant!

I had been there a couple of times before and am always so impressed by it. It is a beautiful church which has the feel of a small cathedral. we all loved it ans spent quite a bit of time in there.

I was wondering about the soy sauce. Esme loves the stuff and eats lots of it, but we have to be careful about the brand. One of the common supermarket brands brings her out in blotches and makes her mouth sore, yet she is unaffected by other brands

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 3 Feb 2023 16:12

Florence -
it may still be the soy sauce, even though you've changed brand.
Nothing to do with gluten - just the soy itself.
You had had soy sauce the night before you were unwell the last time, too.

"You may have stomach cramps, indigestion, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting if you have soy intolerance, which is different than a soy allergy."

Expensive - tell me about it!!!!!!

Looks like you’ll have to stop eating the gluten free. But I do know how annoying it is, I don’t often cook two separate things, mostly. because I am the only one happy to eat pasta. When everyone was at home it was two pies, two cakes etc. We have two toasters and a gluten free cupboard and a small freezer for the bread, which we once had on prescription. Does your daughter cope well when she is away from home?

Make sure any bread recipe you use is suitable for your particular machine. GF bread is really easy as there is no kneading as it is more of a thick batter, so it can be made with a mixer.

Names, its my daughter who has had problems with her bowels. So the GP suggested she went gluten free for a couple of months to see if some of her problems were eased without gluten in her diet. She tested negative for coeliac.

She has felt much better eating gluten free and less pain etc

I thought the scones and pizza tasted ok so to support my daughter, I ate them as well but obviously, my stomach has other ideas!

What i have noticed is the price of gluten free foods though!! So expensive which is why I thought I would make our own gluten free pizza and save some pennies.

A loaf of gluten free bread is terribly expensive but on my new breadmaker, there is a gluten free setting, but havent got that far yet.

Excluding these 2 sickness episodes, I cannot remember the last time I was sick.

Anyway, I had me crumpets and marmite and i feel ok now.

When my daughter was diagnosed as coeliac at 14 she resented it all so I was tasting everything and telling her it was Ok. I ended up with really bad irritable bowel. So now I eat very little gf. Just the biccies and cake..

I don’t know if you ever said why you were going gluten free but it is worth keeping a diary of what you are eating to see if it something specific that is causing the problem.

Will it make you feel better if I tell you my OH is sick for hours if he gets some gluten and almost passes out before sleeping for ages.

Florence61 Report 3 Feb 2023 11:18

Morning all
Linda, you just have to try and extend your walking distance very slowly. A virus can knock your system so badly and it can take months to recover. You sound though as you are doing quite well. At least you can do some walking!

I get my shopping online as I cant get out but it does actually save me money as when I was able to go to the supermarket, it was so easy to pop in everyday and end up spending far more than i needed to.

I was violently sick again at 3am, same symptoms as before. Severe pain in stomach, then sweats and then sick.
I think it may be the gluten free food I had. I tried the new gluten free soy sauce last night and before that the pizza.

Previously I couldnt think what I had but now I remember, i made the gluten free scones. Is it possible that gluten free food does not agree with my sensitive stomach? I shall not eat any more and leave it to my daughter who actually feels so much better with her new diet.

Im ok now but I am exhausted as didnt sleep much as my tummy is empty so going to have an ordinary crumpet with marmite, that will settle me.

My neighbour is coming round Sunday afternoon for coffee at 2pm for a catch up so looking forward to that and that means a good tidy up all round. I would hate it, if someone turned up unannounced and I was knee deep in washing and ironing lol.

As for my tea later, something very light, maybe toast and jam.

Its a soggy day again here, damp, misty and not nice at all.

Have a good day all

I wouldn’t fancy a no carb diet either, but some people eat only fruit, so I guess you can get used to anything

One of my top wisdom teeth sheered off at the gum about four years ago. To get the roots out would have meant an operation as there is nothing to get hold off to pull them out. The dentist said just to leave it and it would be fine, which it has been. I can just feel jagged bits on the gum line.

I have been trying to walk a bit further, I did a circular route yesterday, but I was shattered by the time I got back. Since I had that nasty virus over Xmas, I have been so tired.

It is housework day today and I need to go to the supermarket again, I practically live in that place

She manages it well and fails occasionally. It is very low carb and high fat. It regulates her sugar she is type 2 diabetic. I would find it very hard, no potatoes, bread, biscuits, pastry rice or pasta.
