Akrotiri is (and was in 1963) a Royal Air Force camp. The hospital there had all the births of British Forces and their families in the western area of Cyprus. Both RAF and Army personnel used the hospital and also on rare occasions Royal Navy.

The babies were all British as Akrotiri is on Sovereign Base Area and is classed as British soil. All babies were registered and given a British birth cert. Your mother's birth should be in the British Nationals Armed Forces Births. All the registrations were done on the person's own base. The admin offices handled it. The form from the hospital to prove the birth was handed over and a few questions answered, the same questions as UK. The office then sent the forms off to the Nicosia Consulate and a few days later a birth cert arrived. The birth being registered as stated above.

Before any one queries how I know this, our first child was born at PMRAF Hospital Akrotiri and my husband registered his birth. Our second child was born in Lincoln and my husband registered her birth. We have first hand knowledge of both processes and yes our son is on the register as stated above.

What name are you looking for, it will not be her adopted name. She should have been registered some time in the April- June or July - September 1963. You will have to try to bring down the number of possibles.

Is it possible that she was informally adopted, does she have a birth cert in her adopted name and where is that registered? Both her forenames and surname could have been changed irrespective of what she may have been told, there was a falling out remember.

Hope this has helped. I can also be contacted by PM if you want anything about the procedure or life out here as a forces family. :-)

If she was officially adopted then there must be an adoption file for her. Could you contact the base or the RAF or Army headquarters and ask if they can help?

The birth should be recorded under British Nationals Armed Forces Births 1761-2005

If you would like to give her name someone could have a look for you. (send a pm with the details if you don't want to give her name on this thread).

I've searched that and nothing comes up matching her name. she should ha've been registered as British as technically the bases are classed as British soil

Is this in Cyprus ?

Would she have been registered as "British" ?

Hi,

I am looking for any assistance/tips anyone can give me for finding a record of my mothers birth.

She was born in Akroteri, on the RAF/Army base in June 1963. Some time after this (not sure when) she was adopted by another military family. They had a falling out and as such she has no records or way of finding out her birth surname etc.

I have done a search on here but nothing seems to be coming up that would appear to match and I don't really want to be ordering birth certificates if I am not at least fairly certain it is the correct one.

Is it a lost cause? Or is there any way I would be able to find out this information.

Thanks
Kelly
