Yes Daphne

I have just been looking at different sites and they vary it says the Can was invented for the British Navy and the Can opener was invented later. But the original source I got it from said the Can Opener so I hope I didn't confuse you

The person who invented cans for food didn't think of anything to get them
open with. Very funny. They had cans years before openers.
If the navy had the first cans stands to reason they were the first to need openers.

Thats why this game is so good because I browse different sites on the subject we have posted while I am waiting for a post and you learn so much

Just copied and pasted this its so funny
http://www.ideafinder.com/history/inventions/canopener.htm

The first practical can opener was developed 50 years after the birth of the metal can. Canned food was invented for the British Navy in 1813. Made of solid iron, the cans usually weighed more than the food they held! The inventor, Peter Durand, was guilty of an incredible oversight. Though he figured out how to seal food into cans, he gave little thought to how to get it out again. Instructions read: "Cut round the top near the outer edge with a chisel and hammer." Only when thinner steel cans came into use in the 1860s could the can opener be invented. The first (patented in 1858), devised by Ezra Warner of Waterbury, Connecticut, looked like a bent bayonet. Its large curved blade was driven into a can’s rim, then forcibly worked around its edge. Stranger yet, this first type of can opener never left the grocery store. A clerk had to open each can before it was taken away

Edit; Can you just imagine us in the kitchen with a Chizel and hammer trying to open a can of Baked Beans lol?

So sorry about the mistake but you did get it in the end

one site didn't know what they were talking about. Maybe I should check my questions out first by looking at different sites

LOL. Jackie imagine carrying the open can home in your saddle bag without the horse wearing baked beans.

WhackyJackieInOz

WhackyJackieInOz Report 15 Feb 2009 13:48

lol that would be even funnier

If they were so heavy just imagine the poor horse with all that weight too

Oh glad I live in this Day and age

Edit
I remember the old type can opener they were a nightmare. Where you had to dig it into the can and then use all your force to cut around the rim
I have a really good ergonomic one hardly uses any force to open it

I remember my friends grandparents were very poor and still used squares of newspaper when the rest of us had loo rolls. His grandfather used to read the squares in the loo and get grumpy if the next part of the article was gone.
