Firstly, I would like to apologise that this blog was not completed until today, and should have been posted over a week ago. Hopefully, despite my negligence, you still enjoy the report. Well, the final day at RootsTech2012 is over (well for me at least), and what an amazing, informative, motivating experience it has been. RootsTech2012? I was going to equate it to the "Who Do You Think You Are" show at Olympia in London (UK), but that would be an unfair comparison. RootsTech is in its 2nd year, hosted by FamilySearch.org in Salt Lake City, Utah USA (and jointly sponsored by brightsolid and several other companies), and is quite unique in terms of content. It is both a genealogy show for genealogists and family history enthusiasts, but also a technical conference where all the major and minor for-profit and not-for-profit companies in the genealogy business get together to discuss new technical innovations that are being incorporated into this field and are discussed openly in the hope that we all rise to the challenge in providing and securing genealogical records, research and discoveries for now and the future. It was so pleasing to see non-technical genealogists showing a a direct interest in the technology seminars, as well as developers and the like attending user focused seminars, and this cross fertilisation of ideas and concepts and requirements between the groups.

On Friday 24th June three members of the Genes Reunited Team set off to York from London Kings Cross station. We were really looking forward to attending the Yorkshire Family History Fair for the first time. We arrived at York racecourse late afternoon and started setting up our stand. We were situated on the Mezzanine along with The National Archives and local county record offices. We had a fantastic view over the entire race course! Once we were all happy with the stand and had checked that all the computers were working we set off to explore York by night. We had a lovely walk through the city, down the Shambles, a beautiful medieval street and to the Minster, York’s Gothic Cathedral. The Minster was founded in 627 and apparently is one of the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. The full title of the Minster is, The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York. At night it is completely lit up with spot lights making it look even more striking.

Last weekend the Genes team were very excited to be attending the Who Do You Think You Are show at Olympia this for the very first time. We had all been discussing and planning the event for months and there had been lots of meetings and discussions to make sure everything was just as we wanted. Ryan (our designer) worked really hard making sure the set was going to look as authentic as possible.

Last Thursday, along with Rhoda, head of Genes Reunited, I caught an ealry Aer Lingus flight and headed over to Dublin to attend the 'Back To Our Past' exhibition. Rhoda and I were both pretty nervous having never taken part in an exhibition before, we didn't know what to expect or what the reaction to Genes Reunited was going to be like.
