I can look up Jersey BMD's and parish records.
As much information as possible, especially the parish if known.

Hi Pam, I have WAY's on mine that settled in Jersey. One of them, Charlton WAY married Susan COOPERI believe In the parish of St. Lawrence. First son Charlton WAY was born 3/7/1862. I have no date for their marriage or for the births of their other children, John (c1864 Jersey), William Henry (c1866 Jersey), Edward (c1869 St. Helier), Susan Jane (c1870 Grouville), Charlton (c1880 Jersey).

I have Susan die circa 1882.

This all I have on Charlton & Susan. Most of the data comes from census data. If you can put dates/places to any of the above I would appreciate it.

What are the research facilities on Jersey like? Is there a central record office?

Hi Derek

Jersey has a central Archive which holds transcriptions of all the parish records and the indexes for BMD's. The certificates themselves are at the Registry Office in St Helier and are available to view FREE (although I try not to go there too often)

This is the site for the Archive if you haven't already found it
www.jerseyheritagetrust.jeron.je/home, there are lots of Ways listed on it and details of the records held on them.

The Archive is next open on Tues so I'll see what I can find for you then.

Hi Jim

I can look at, and make notes about the documents that you are interested in with no cost involved. What I can't do is take copies if they are not for my own use. In order to do that you would have to contact the Archive and fill in a copyright declaration form, the minimum charge for that is £5.

Hi Pam
I'm wondering if you can help me. One of my ancestors Hugh Polgreen was living in St Helier Jersey at the time of 1851 census. He was married to Susanna and they had a child by the name of Elizabeth born in St Helier (shown on the census as being 3 months). The actual name shown on the record is Polgrend but it is actually Polgreen (Or Pollgreen). Is it possible to find the record of her birth date or baptism date in the records. If you can help I would be most grateful.

Thelma was born in 1942 and used to visit Jersey as a child.
Olga Thorne lived,with her husband,in rooms at 26 Sand Street which was the Tostevin family home.We had no idea that Olga was William Le Vote's niece.Thelma thinks that William and Olga may have been French?

I'm afraid I've not been very succesful with your Way family.

I did find the marriage of Charlton Way and Susan Cooper. This took place at St Lawrence Church on April 14th, 1861. Charlton is aged 23, a mariner from Tolpedel (Tolpuddle?) in Dorset. His father was William, a labourer.
Susan was aged 20, born in Corfu (maybe Corfe?), her father was John, a soldier. The witnesses were a Mary Ann Riggs and Jean Mauger - pronounced 'major'.
There is a birth for Charlton Way on the 3rd July, 1862 - Charlton senior is a labourer.
I also found the birth for Edward Way on 4th June 1868 but could not find any of the others - I'll have another look for the rest of the family another time.
As there are 2 Charlton's among the children did the first one die?did Dad Charlton run out of names that he liked? or was the 1880 one a grandchild?

Hello Mary,

Here are the birth details that you wanted for Elizabeth Polgreen.

19th Oct 1850, Elizabeth Susan, father Hugh Polgrees, forgeron, (blacksmith), mother Susan Wakley - no 'e' on the entry but it looks as if it should have one, ie WakEley! Family living at 43 Snow Hill, St Helier.

According to the indexes Edith Leah Jeune died between April 1918 and Feb 1920. Volume 50, Page 23

I have 2 possibilities for John

John Frederick who died between Feb 1920 and Mar 1922 (Vol 51 Page 43) or John James who died between Apr 1924 and July 1926 (Vol 53 Page 81)

i can have a look at the death certificates next time I am in town and they should give the cause of death.

I have looked through the St Helier births index without finding your Florence Mary Dowinton, although there are quite a few other Dowintons. I also looked under Ryan with no results. I will have a look at the other parishes next time I'm at the Archive.
Is the mother Florence Ryan the one on the Jersey 1901 census aged 2 with parents John and Emma?

According to the 1891 Jersey census John R Jeune was living at 3 Colomberie Place and was born in 1888. In 1901 he is still living there and still born in 1888 (mistranscribed as Jenne) - parents Edwin and Mary J, siblings Emma, Edwin and Thomas.
So he was not one of the Jeune deaths I found yesterday - oh well, back to the drawing board!
I'll have another look tomorrow.
