Joyce, if you don't know where he died how do you know the death I posted isn't his?
I agree £9.25 for a certificate is a bit steep if it's the wrong one.

Joyce, is this John's death?
England & Wales, FreeBMD Death Index: 1837-1915 about John Mcdowell Name: John Mcdowell Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1849 Registration district: Stoke Damerel Inferred County: Devonshire Volume: 9 Page: 441
If so, the only way to find out why he died young is to order a copy of his death certificate.

Joyce - on the 1853 marriage record there is a Charlotte McDowell and a William Beeching. There is then the 1861 census showing Wm and Charlotte Beeching so that shows which pair married.

Joyce, Dea has put ***** next to the names on that 1902 marriage record to indicate who the bride and groom were - namely, Blanche Susannah Bailey and Percy James Reynolds. This couple were staying with Blanche's sister May (Mabel) on the 1911.
The years married on the census are 7 for Mabel and Edmund and 9 for Blanche and Percy.
The daughter Maisie age 5 is most likely a nickname for your May Emily.
Where did you get the info from re: Edmunds birth year and possible naval occupation?
Are you trying to trace Percy backwards or forwards?

Looks like 'Mabel' may well be May Bailey as Blanche Reynolds could well be her sister?
I will look further.
