That's who I suspected that Agnes's parents would be.

As Joy's mum said that she came from Perth, I think it may have been a white lie with a grain of truth

Agnes's own mother, Agnes Blair was born in Lanarkshire but her mother ( Joy's great grandmother) was from Perth

Angela,
Who were Agnes's parents named on her death cert?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 2 Feb 2017 21:56

No, the informant doesn't have to be a relative.
Usually there's some explanation in brackets after the informant's name, to say who the person is. Relative, landlord, doctor, whatever.

Ive obtained the death certificate for Agnes Blair ferguson born 1926, died 1979, and it states her occupation as a clerkess. Which ties in with jennys birth mother who worked in london in an office. So im pretty sure this is her.
The informant on the death cert is one Francis Chtistie of 39 mcAllister Ave Airdrie. Could this be a relative, or is it just the person who reported the death.

Angela,
We can't say for certain that Joy's mother was definitely the girl who was born in Airdrie 1926 but, assuming her own birth was registered as Agnes Blair Ferguson, she is the only potential candidate.

As her death is registered in Airdrie 1979, I assume that she must have returned to the area, and given her age, it's unlikely she had other children

Why would she state that she came from Perth, Perthshire which is over 60 miles from Airdrie, Lanarkshire?

The only thing that I can suggest, is to obtain the 1979 death certificate and check her occupation for a match with Joy/Jenny's birth mother

Angela

Angela Report 24 Jan 2017 17:10

Agnes named her Joy, her adoptive mother changed her name to Jenny,. Agnes was definitely born in 1926 , and lived in london for a while. Did she go back to airdrie, did she have any more children.

I don't wish to lead anyone along the wrong path but, logicially, Agnes Blair Ferguson b 1926 in Airdrie is likely to be the daughter of:
James Bennet Ferguson ( b1899) and Agnes Blair ( b1896) who married in Old Monkland 1925.

James died in Airdrie in 1957 followed by his wife in 1958

Edit:
If Agnes Blair b1896-1958 is the person that I suspect she might be...
Although she was born in Lanarkshire, "her" mother was from Perthshire.
Father from Stirlingshire

Angela,
What was your friend's name at birth?
Jenny? Joy? or was it something else?

It's a long shot but she "may" have been named for Agnes's own mother as per tradition.

We have probably found Agnes's birth and death records, Angela - ie - 1926 and 1979.
What else have you been trying to find? Is there anything we can help you with?

Did you (or Jenny) buy a copy of Agnes's birth cert to see who her parents were, as advised earlier? You won't be able to find out anything more about Agnes's ancestry without that information.

Her death certificate might provide some helpful info, if the informant was a family member.

If the mother is deceased and died in Scotland, the year would be post 1963.
There are only two possibles with first names Agnes Blair containing the last name of Ferguson

Re: Agnes Blair Ferguson b 1926 in Airdrie.
Fairly certain that she is the same woman who died in Airdrie in 1979 age 53yrs
No other surname on death index suggests that she was unmarried.

One other Agnes Blair Ferguson died in Glasgow in 1964.
She can be discounted as her maiden name was Cliff ( husband Roderick Ferguson)

There is no Scottish marriage post 1963 for anyone named Agnes Blair Ferguson

I don't like the "new" Scotlands People as much as the original version - apart from the fact that it's now possible to do a basic search free of charge - a definite improvement..

But it is the official website with all the records on it - if you can find them. Make use of the different search options re variations of spelling, etc.

Ancestry has some Scottish records, but not as fully as SP.

Here's the 1926 birth on Scotlands People, with ref nos..

1926 FERGUSON AGNES BLAIR F AIRDRIE OR NEW MONKLAND /LANARK 651/00 1021

You (or Jenny) can order a copy through SP, Angela, for £12.

It will tell you Agnes's parents' names/ ages / where and when they married.

With that info you can find their marriage record, which will give their ages , occupations, parents' names, father's occupation, etc.

And so on, back through the generations.

SP isn't a subscription site, so you'll need to register and buy credits.

Well if that death is the lady she would have been about 43 so could be

But the 1926 birth is also a possibility she would be 37

If Jenny hasn't got her adoption file then that would be the way to go I suggest.

Am guessing the address in Enfield was probably digs or maybe rented at the time

Angela Report 29 Jul 2016 22:43

I'm pretty sure jenny has her birth cert, but this is the only information she has. Agnes wasnt married, jenny was a result of an affair with her boss. And jenny did say she was 38ish when agnes had her.
