I Have located a relative Emma Allgood on the 1891 census at 19 Church Street, West Barnwell, Cambridge. She is listed as an inmate aged 18, she appears to be the oldest as there are other girls aged 17.
I was surprised to see a refuge at this date, she was the oldest girl in a large family from a village near Cambridge, the other girls are from further afield.
Does anyone have any ideas what circumstances might have lead her there or who might have ran the refuge. The building no longer exists and I haven't been able to find any mention of the place in history pages for Cambridge. West Barnwell was a rundown area at the time.
Thanks

The info on the link posted by Maddie says that inmates had to remain there for two years.
If she was there because she was "a fallen woman", there is this birth which might possibly be her child, given that she was there in 1891:
Births Sep 1889 (>99%) Allgood Arthur James Cambridge 3b 480
EDIT:
But he died in infancy:
Deaths Mar 1890 (>99%) Allgood Arthur James 0 Cambridge 3b 364
I wonder if Emma would still have had to stay for two years if her baby had died ?

Yes, you're right, Maddie - I'd forgotten about searching GRO for mms.
An old thread from someone else about the refuge though doesn't help much:
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/genealogy_chat/thread/876054
Perhaps the refuge was connected to the church of St Andrew the Less - though I can't find anything to say so.

Below for more area reference, River Lane still there, but a lot now gone, Elizabeth Way roundabout, leading down to Newmarket Road area.
(1894 Newspaper article referring to Death of Edward Johnson Parry (he is also on 1891 image) refers to his time spent in Cambridge (Degree) plus his work among the poor in the Christ's Church Parish. For two years he took entire charge of the River Lane Mission.
