This is one i keep putting on the back burner.
I pop him out every now and then, then i give up, and pop him back again! :-|
Before i throw the towel in.......perhaps someone else might be able to find out what happened to him.
Here goes........
William James Porter
William James Porter in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Birth Index, 1837-1915 Name: William James Porter Registration Year: 1900 Registration Quarter: Jul-Aug-Sep Registration district: South Stoneham Inferred County: Hampshire Volume: 2c
The son of James William Porter and Mary Ann Dudley.
According to the 1901 and 1911 census records, it seems William actually preferred his middle name of James.

I am certain this is my James on an incoming passenger list, as he gives the same address as one of his brothers on another passenger list.
James Porter in the UK, Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960 Name: James Porter Birth Date: abt 1900 Age: 37 Occupaton: Greaser Proposed Address in UK: Name: 358 Priory Road, St Deny's, Southampton Port of Departure: Durban, South Africa Arrival Date: 13 Sep 1937 Port of Arrival: Southampton, England Ship Name: Warwick Castle Shipping line: Union-Castle Mail Steamship Company Ltd Official Number: 162527
So he was still alive in 1937
That is the last i see of him.
I have checked the address of....358 Priory Road, St Deny's, Southampton on the 1939 Register.......but there are no family members living at that address at that time.
I found a marriage for a James Porter.......
Marriages Mar 1918 (>99%) Crowfoot Annie E Porter Southampton 2c 83 Porter James Crowfoot Southampton 2c 83
I found 2 births registered for Annie E Crowfoot
Births Sep 1892 (>99%) Crowfoot Annie Elizabeth Poole 5a 258
She married in 1920........
Marriages Sep 1920 (>99%) Abbott Walter C Crowfoot Poole 5a 788 Crowfoot Annie E Abbott Poole 5a 788
Births Jun 1900 (>99%) Crowfoot Annie Elizabeth Norwich 4b 110
She died in 1900
Deaths Sep 1900 (>99%) Crowfoot Annie Elizabeth 0 Norwich 4b 87
Not had any luck with a James....William James.... or an Annie E Porter on the 1939 Register.
I don't have access to World Wide records.......so maybe there is something there that i am missing?
Any help........much appreciated.
Thank you.........Prickles. :-)

Just a thought Prickles, the occupation of Greaser is normally associated with ships - could he have been in the Merchant or Royal Navy? Like you I don't have ww access, so can't check for him on shipping lists.

The marriage you've found in 1918 would make him just 17, so maybe a bit of a red herring? Although his bride may have been a war widow, so that was not her birth name - but it seems unlikely unless he preferred older women.
Trouble is, if the shipping records found are actually him (and the address in 1937 appears to confirm this) then you've no idea where to look for marriages or deaths unless he can be further traced through shipping records.

If you think the Border Crossing posted by Malyon is relevant, the image says his brother Fred lived in Southampton.
He originally arrived in 5 May 1944 on the MV Toordis? His destination was his wife Frances @ 559 West 156th St, NY

Please would someone be so kind as to check the image of the 1952 passenger's list that Malyon posted.
Is the wife Frances actually travelling with William James?
If so, does it give any details about her?
It states......."Photogragh Included"........Is there actually a photogragh attached to that record?
Thank you.......Prickles.
