I have finally sorted a copy of my grandads company or training unit group photo. He trained from feb to april 1918. He was then posted to the provisional Battalion, reserve battalion and then the 2nd battalion after the war.

Do not know the name of any others on the photo but if anyone thinks their relative may be on there, then please get in touch.

Hubbie & I visited the Coldstream earlier in the year whilst on a visit to Durham and Northumberland. There is a small but well stocked museum in the town which is well worth a visit. The museum of the Border Regiments is in Berwick-upon-Tweed and is housed in the original barracks which makes it very atmospheric.

It is definately worth sending of for the records. I found his first wife's name and the child they had and also a drunken fight and a small prison sentence for doing so. Also what he looked like, but i knew that already. It was great to see. I have about 5 photos of coldstream guards both with my grandfather and in groups. They are nice photos. so i don't who everyone else is in the photo apart from my grandfather. :-D

The regiment would hold the regimental/war diaries which will hold a lot of information about where the regiment was posted and which battles they fought in.

All most army records hold are the entry/exit forms, conduct and health and pay & reports on miscellaneous training. If you are lucky they may have been a naughty boy and there will be lots in the conduct records. Found some for a friend and there were pages relating to drunken fights, missed work (due to oversleeping!). But in the main these are very 'dry' records.

The information held in the diaires is what most people think they will get when ordering their ancestors records and many are disappointed when they find that the information they have waited nearly 10 months for is not that informative on what their ancestor actually did.

My grandfather joined the Coldstream Guards in 1918. I have found the pension records on ancestry and would like to know if its worth contacting the regimental museum and archivist in London?
Would they have other records than those on ancestry etc?
