I have been researching my family tree for a few months now and up till now have been happy just to log on to GR and update it online. When I tried creating a Gedcom file I wasn't really sure of what I was doing and didn't feel the need for it. I've also heard lots of stories about information failing to be attached. I assumed that one can export the Gedcom file to your offline version periodically in order to have your tree available without logging on all the time. Can someone confirm whether this is right, whether it's advisable to carry your tree offline and what the advantages are. These are probably very obvious questions to most of you so I would be grateful for a clear explanation.

Basically it is a good idea to back up your tree, but gedcoms are only text and relationships. Photos, records, links etc are not covered,

Whether you have your Genes tree as the master and regularly export gedcoms or another tree as master and regularly import gedcoms from that tree is a matter of personal preference.

On a personal note i have an offline tree which i have built from scratch,i download a gedcom from that to say GR and other sites i use, i would never upload a gedcom to my offline tree,otherwise it would overwrite all the fine details i have included in this which are not on my online trees.

As far as offline trees are concerned, to me it is essential otherwise lets say if GR went "pop" and if you only have your tree on here then your tree goes "pop" as well
