Origin of a Middle Name

My father´s name is Robert Gilmour Foulis, I can see when the name Gilmour was added into the family name back in 1877 but cannot find where it came from. I have researched on both the father and mothers families, especially the mothers ancestors. I have also looked on the birth certificate at the registers name and ministers name as it was suggested to me that sometimes the middle name can come from that person, but no luck there. |

From a tree on Ancestry it seems most of the children in this family were given surnames as their middle names. |
