Iam currently searching for my Grandads sister who as we have found out since getting the death certificate, died whilst in the workhouse in 1921. She was only 13 months old and we cannot seem to find where she is buried. We have contacted the crematorium to see if she was buried in the local cemetery but nothing has shown up. Her father did live in Newton but her burial has not shown their either. I was just wondering if anyone knew of another place where these people were buried? Would it be on the actual site? If anyone could shed any light on where to obtain workhouse records I would really appreciate it. Thank You.

From Warrington Workhouse site:-

Records
Lancashire Record Office, Bow Lane, Preston, Lancashire, PR1 2RE. Few records survive — main holdings are Guardians' minutes (1837-1900).

At that time if a baby died and the family could not afford a funeral the baby was sometimes placed in the coffin of someone who was being buried at the same time.

The county records office may have details of burials. My husband's baby brother who only lived for 12 hours in 1946 was placed in the same coffin as a 2 year old girl but we did find a record of his burial at the county records office.

Hi Kate and welcome to the Community Boards.


Have you check with local churches to see if the child was buried there?
St. Elphin's in Warrington certainly has a churchyard and the following are in Newton.

Park Road South, Cemetery, Newton le Willows
Emmanuel, Wargrave Road, Church of England
St.Peter, Church St, Church of England
Crow Lane, Congregational
St Mary and St John, Crow Lane, Roman Catholic, Newton le Willows
