Hi I wonder if anyone can help. I found out yesterday that I have a half sister in Holland somewhere. Can anyone tell me how I would go about tracing her. I am waiting for a letter containing her name from my father whom I have only just found thanks to the help of some wonderfull people on GR. Any help and advice would be amazing. Thank you <3

From the looks of it, assuming she was born there, Civil registration events before 1945ish are not made public.

There are a couple of members who live in Holland; they may know how to search for living relatives.

If you have an up to date surname, you might be able to find her in the phone book

Thank you +++DetEcTive+++ as soon as I have the relevant information I shall add it to this post and thank you for the link. I am positivley itching to find out her name and beggin my search :-) One thing I do know is that she was born sometime between 1977 and 1979. :-)

Have a look at http://www.gahetna.nl/en which is the website of the Friends of the Nationaal Archief (the Dutch National Archives). It is available in English and Dutch and has useful tips on searching for Dutch ancestors. Obviously, original records will be in Dutch but it is a good website to start you off.

Thank you Thomas. Sorry for my very late response had a death in the family and work commitments have been hectick of late.

My sisters name is Clara her mums name is Hidi Aru which is a common surname in Sardinia which is were Hidis family are from. There is a possability that they moved back to Sardinia Italy. There is a possabilty that Hidi was born in Amsterdam. Clara was born in Amsterdam in approx 1977/78 not sure which month. Any help would be fantastic. Thank you

Anyone know how you gain access to birth records in Amsterdam? Is there a separate GR site for over in Holland? Help Please hit a massive brick wall here :-\

Found this post from 2003 on another forum asking a similar question.

"In the Netherlands, birth records are public up until 1902, and marriage records are public up until 1922. There are also population records, listing all the people living in the same household, called "bevolkingsregister" or "gezinskaarten" in Dutch. They span the period 1850 - 1939 and are public.

The civil registry and the population registers of Amsterdam are kept at the municipal archive in Amsterdam. Their website is at http://gemeentearchief.amsterdam.nl/, the index of gezinskaarten is on-line at http://gemeentearchief.amsterdam.nl/archieven/genealogie/gez.... Just type in a surname (achternaam) and optionally an initial (Voorletter), and hit "search" (zoek). if you find someone with the right birth date (geb. datum, remember that the Dutch use the format DD-MM-YYYY) in the list and click on "order" (bestel).

The rest of Noord-Holland (the civil registry, that is) is kept in Haarlem. Their website is at http://www.noordhollandsarchief.org/. Their e-mail address is [email protected].

Both archives can do research for you, but are quite expensive, about 40 euro (about 48 US$) per hour, last time I checked. It's much cheaper to do it yourself, e.g. through the family history centers of the Latter Day Saints' ("mormon") church."
