Member Since: February 2007 Posts: 3 Send Message	Does anyone know if there are any war pensions records available from WW1. My grandfather was invalided out of WW1 but all his army records were destroyed during WW2. He received a war pension until his death in 1963 and just wondered if there may be information in the Pensions Dept that have survived. Any help appreciated Thanks Margaret

	As you've already researched the ones in the public domain and found nothing, its possible that the DWP might have something archived. As his death was such a while ago, they might probably wouldn't have been digitalised, and may even have been destroyed. There's no harm in trying! (link removed as a better one posted below)

	As other members have pointed out on the Military Chat thread, soldiers wounded in service were often given a Silver War Badge, The results don't automatically come up as an Ancestry quivering leaf. Have you looked for his name on that data-base, or care to give it here?

Chris :) Historical Background The British Empire lost more than 700,000 service personnel killed in World War 1. An even greater number were discharged because of wounds or illness. In September 1916, King George V authorized the Silver War Badge (SWB) to honor all military personnel who had served at home or overseas since 4 August 1914 and who had been discharged because of wounds or illness. The SWB was a small, circular badge made of sterling silver, bearing the king’s initials, a crown, and the inscriptions ‘For King and Empire’ and ‘Services Rendered’. The SWB was not simply an honor; it also served a practical purpose. At the time, men of military age who were not obviously in the service were sometimes accosted or insulted by civilians presenting them with white feathers — a symbol of cowardice — for shirking their patriotic duty.
