Is anybody able to guide me as to where I might find out about a man called Robert Ferguson who travelled to India during the early 1900's and married a lady only known as Matilda, in the Calcutta area. They had several children one of whom was named Gladys.

Hi Patchem, I don't have a date for the marriage but the eldest son was born in 1920 and was called Alan . There were several other children,

Gladys was born 26.9.1924.

I have no idea if Mary Ellen would have ever styled herself Matilda or not. This chap might be a complete red herring.

Unfortunately no, I don't know his occupation. I will ask my Aunt if she has any recollection. As you say this may not be the correct man but I spent ages looking for a Louisa to find that she was listed as Lucy, so it would be worth investigating whether Mary Ellen could have been known as Matilda. Certainly something for me to work with.

Oh my goodness, write day and month of birth, correct parents but seemingly wrong year.

In all there were several children Alan, Elsie, Gladys, Florence, Ferdinand and Leo but I understood them all to have been born in the 1920's. I need to speak to my Aunt. Is this information from family search?

My info is from the British in India stuff on FMP, but I think family search will have some of it.

Clifford Ferguson was a signatory to the marriage of Gladys and I have seen the original marriage certificate, however everything you have found seems to suggest that the information that my Aunt has given me is 10 years out with dates, or Robert and Matilda were not the parents but the grandparents. Oh what a muddle!

I have just noticed the address 118 Lower Circular Road, I had 117 Lower Circular Road and yes they were Catholics.

I am really grateful to you for this information, there are too many similarities for there not to be a connection, I will let you know how I get on.
