Having transcribed many French acts , I would comment on "lecture faite".

In the French archives, records of marriage and burial commonly end with "signé apres la lecture" (or similar). Which translates as 'signed after (the) reading'. So I think the Canadian "lecture faite" is equivalent to "apres la lecture".
Which could mean that they read the register and signed that it was a true record of the event.

I had a doctor's appt yesreday. My doctor was a francophone quebecois - he's completely bilingual now, but has no genealogical experience (nor interest).

His guess was that "Lecture faite" just meant "The record is done".

All I need to do now is print off what research has been done by brilliant helpful individuals and then decide which is the right Napoleon. Once again thank-you to everyone here as without your help these records would have remained a "mystery" to me. :-)

Argyllgran - a better translation than mine

I had (something something) as We, the undersigned vicar, having....
[They usually say Priest vicar - I suppose vicar is the most equivalent C of E rank]

I read "(something) made" as "lecture faite", and translate this as "proclaim the marriage".


Most of the marriages follow this form, even down to the reading of just one bann.

The only disagreement I have is your translation of "dit St Jean" as "known as St Jean"
It can mean that, but it can mean so much more that I would leave that bit of the name as "dit St Jean".

Sophrenie was probably Girard for the burial service.
This was common in Quebec, even more than Scotland.
Here's my dad's aunt:

You can see that although many of the names are repeated, the handwriting is making it difficult to decide on the correct spelling.

I have managed to locate relatives on Ancestry who lived in Quebec Canada. If anyone here who has Ancestry would be willing to translate the documents I would be very grateful.

The name is Napoleon Merineau. His baptism is in 1868 in Montréal St-Vincent-de-Paul. His marriage is in 1893 Montréal St-Jean-Baptiste and burial in 1936 Montréal Basilique Notre-Dame
