As mentioned before Jacqueline the son in law knows nothing!
I know that he was alive at least in the late 70's as his granddaughter rememebers briefly meeting him once.

As you have 6 weeks to register a birth, with the marriage that late in February William could have been registered as late as the June quarter 1921 - which unfortunatly throws 2 more births into the mix! You're not having much luck here!!!

Hopefully the son in law will still have a copy of his late wife's birth cert, and their marriage cert - to check the occupation of her father on both, and whether he was deceased by the time of her marriage, or know whether he actually attended the wedding.

Jacqueline Report 28 Jul 2015 15:10

Not necessarily. She would have to have given his name

Surely the son in law could tell you, in any case. He would have known if his father-in-law was there

I don't think the daughter married in 1946..........

Leaving this now..................

I havent checked her birth certificate.. ill see if i can get my hands on that one!
She was an only child.
The date of the marriage was 24th February 1946.
As William wasnt marked as deceased on the marriage certificate im taking it that he did attend the wedding..
His daughter died in 2008.

Did William attend his daughter's wedding?

When did she die?

Flip

Flip Report 28 Jul 2015 13:35

You say his daughter passed away, but have you checked her birth certificate for her fathers occupation or their address? Was she an only child, maybe if they had more children theirs could give further leads?

IF the age given on their marriage is correct he was born between Feb 1920 (whatever the marriage date was) and Feb 1921. The only births are the 2 I posted earlier and these 2:

Births Jun 1920 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wilson William G Forecast Bethnal G. 1c226
Wilson William G Woollen W.Ham 4a363

However, as you will know there were a further 2 reg in June 1921 if you allow for late registration, what date was the marriage?

How can you find relatives when you don't know where the man was born?

Why don't you get the death cert?

n

n Report 28 Jul 2015 11:19

aaaaaah!! maybe ill see if i can find a distant relative who might know something... :-S

You won't find William G online but may find his father on the National archives site - they only go to 1923, but have enlistment details. Trouble is you have no idea where and when the father was born.

Searching AMD188 brings up 321 William Wilsons!

When ordering service records, you may be asked to prove that you are the next of kin

Military records post 1922 aren't on-line. You have to order them @ £30 from the MOD

This is the link for obtaining UK service records:
http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html

It would be cheaper to purchase the certificates @ £9.25 each!

Thank you all...

Gin her father was Lewis (or Louis) Herbert Miller and the witnesses were Kenneth Wilson and Esther (what looks like) Westall.

Ive tried to search Naval records for both William George and his father William but cant seem to find any that fit? I used findmypast... would you say that is a good place to look for military records??

As Jacqueline has suggested, you need the death certificate and he may not have been born England/Wales. However if he was, then there are no births in OND 1920, but 2 reg in JFM 1921:

Births Mar 1921 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wilson William G Llewellyn Narberth 11a2693
Wilson William G Barnfather Carlisle 10b1080

I think the Narberth one had a father Melville L, as there is a marriage in same reg district in 1917

The Carlisle one appears to have these parents:

Marriages Jun 1920 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Barnfather Susan Wilson Carlisle 10b1509
Wilson William J Barnfather Carlisle 10b1509

He may be worth checking out, to find the father's occupation.

If he was still in the navy in 1946 then maybe his naval records would be obtainable which may give more info on him

Just looked at all the William Wilson's Wills entry none seem to fit that death date.

Looking at the Gov site for Wills there is an entry for a William George Wilson who died 3 March 1993 although it does not exactly fit the criteria as above, you could look at the rest of William Wilson's entries to see if any other entries are more applicable.
