Thanks to you all, I have a clearer idea of events. James was married to Emily and had 4 children, he then went on to have five more children with Ada Williams only marrying her when Emily died, both events in the Dec quarter 1934. This ties in with the family story of a first wife who was catholic so could not divorce, though the earlier 4 children are a bit of a shock! A genesreunited member shares some of my family and has corroborated these facts. Thanks again for all your help

Christine, do you have the marriage certificate of James to Ada Mary? Is he listed as widowed?

What age is James on the marriage, and who did he list as his father.

What was his address?

When and where were the child/ children of James and Ada born?

What year was Ada born?

My mistake 1931 Emily , James,daughter Violet Ellen.

I think there were two different families,ie Emily and James + Ada Mary and James.

Don't think that can be correct one- they are both at the same address (10 Greenway) in 1930 (unless it's a mistake in the year on Ancestry, as I don't see them again until 1934?)

EDIT: It's not a mistake- they are listed at 10 Greenway in 1931 & 1933 too.

So- something's not right. The James that married Emily is either, not the same James that married Ada Mary, or the James that died in 1940 is not the same James that married in 1934! (unless they lived as married before they were actually married?)

Thank you everyone who has helped me, i am waiting for a copy of James' will, deceased 1940, probate granted to Ada, I that may throw some light on events. I think we now have the date of death of Emily Perry. Where do I find copies of the ER? Thanks again to all.

Yes, without a certificate to prove I think the marriage is the one Dec 1896. Harold and Gladys are the same age (twins?). I am beginning to think there may have been a bigamous marriage to Ada (my grandmother). I have not looked for a death beyond the second marriage ! Maybe James was put under pressure to do the decent thing! There is talk in the family of the first wife (Emily) being catholic, so no divorce.
