My wife's mother's maiden name was Tushingham, and she often remarked to my wife about her relative, Zelma Shone, nee Owen. Both these families were publicans, George Tushingham being the licensee of The New Inn, in Newtown, Chester, and Horace Owen licensee of The Angel Hotel in Brook Street, Chester. Zelma P. Owen was born in 1921 to a lady: maiden name Tushingham. I am attempting to ascertain the link at this stage, and would appreciate a pointer or two in this quest.
My interest has been aroused by a superb article in the 'Cheshire Ancestor' by a member of the Family History Society of Cheshire, Mr Chester Guttridge.
My late mother-in -law was Fridiswid M. Tushingham, who was orphaned in her early teens, and went to live-in and work for her grandfather George Tushingham at the New Inn, where she stayed until she married.
Chester Guttridge mentions John Tushingham, who had previously been married to Elizabeth Shone; who had herself been previously been married to a Faulkner. The story Mr Guttridge tells is of a series of difficult circumstances, the main character of which is Ann, who married three times, and who had come into conflict with the law on several occasions throughout her life. Her maiden name was Williamson, and lived with her parents at The White Swan in Milton Street Chester. Her final marriage was to a John Tushingham, 47, born 1838, and a labourer, in November 1885. Her second marriage was to Benjamin Phillip Owen. So the Owen name comes up again! He was made bankrupt after neglecting his business in 1882.
Comments are welcome!

MargaretM,
Thank you again, for these two records of Zelma's birth and her mother, they are likely to help me answer my question, and yours!
I'll get back to you with an answer, as soon as I've thought it out! Which I'm not very quick with these days, aged 77 !

If I've guessed right, I don't see any Owen connection NB I've appended quarter of registration to ChesBMD entries
Cheshire Birth indexes for the years: 1897 [q1] Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference TUSHINGHAM Martha Annie Chester Cathedral Cheshire West CAT/78/45
Cheshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1920 [q3] Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference OWEN Horace TUSHINGHAM Martha Annie Chester, Christ Church Cheshire West CE11/3/104
I'm guessing this is their deaths: Deaths Dec 1958 (>99%) OWEN Horace 64 Chester 10a 337
Deaths Sep 1963 (>99%) OWEN MARTHA A 66 CHESTER 10A 173
Cheshire Birth indexes for the years: 1895 [q1] Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference OWEN Horace Chester Cathedral Cheshire West CAT/75/35 [There are also births in Nantwich RD in 1893q3 and 1895q1 - both in the Crewe subdistrict]
Church Street, Newtown, Chester (2013) http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3305544 Comparing this pic with the one in the oldpubs URL Chris posted, we can see the pub as the creamy building on right in middle ground (i.e., SE corner of crossroads with Walter St) The blurb says: Subject Location OSGB36: SJ 4078 6703 [10m precision] Photographer Location OSGB36: SJ 4077 6703 View Direction East-northeast (about 67 degrees)
The blurb gives the view direction as ENE - we can see the subject is somewhat east of viewer as its easting coordinate is bigger (the northings are the same). The photographer must have his back to Christ Church. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3305462 http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1068131

To: mgnv,
Thank you for all the work you've done here to find and illustrate the Owen link.
The one Owen link that we know to be correct is that provided by MargaretM in my later thread here. We actually know that this link is correct from Tushingham family members, not least of whom was my late mother-in-law, Fridiswid Mary Tushingham, later Grice, who spoke regularly of Zelma Shone, nee Owen, who appears to have been a favourite relative of hers. Zelma's parents being Horace Owen and Martha Annie Tushingham.
I'll take a closer look at your posting & print it off for future use in compiling our tree, as I have done for all the replies to my quertion.
Regards,
Horrace

So looks like Joseph William and Martha are half brother and sister as they have the same father. That would make Fridiswid and Zelma first cousins?

Hello rootgatherer,
You've certainly gathered a lot of roots here! Thank you for all this effort on my/our behalf. I'll need to peruse them at length to do them justice!
I'll print them off and file them so that I have them to hand to use some of your many findings. Zelma Shone nee Owen was a favourite cousin of my mother-in-law Fridiswid Mary Tushingham, and she was always talking about where they went and what they did!
Great stuff, thanks!
