it was tradition ................

Sorry Silvia I was obviously not paying attention ;-)
I have looked on family search now.
My head is aching from this, but it is fascinating and very addictive.
There seems to be a trend where the children are named after the parents and grandparents, was this some sort of tradition or were they just short of imagination?

Thanks for the tips on the free sites.
Wow this stuff really gives me headaches.
Thanks safc for throwing Ann Appleton in the mix, if William and Sarah Ella were her parents they would have been around 14 and 15 when they had her...now you are going to tell me that was normal in those days :-0

Kay...I looked at the Emma Yarr marrying Harry Appleton, knowing that Henry is sometimes referred as Harry, but Emma was a Bagnall...unless she was married before she got with Henry...she does appear to be a man eater!

Malyon where did you find the family search?

Robert .............

further to your question re where to look

Most of us use sites other than GR for records.

I have subscriptions to Ancestry - UK and to FMP World.

I find those subs invaluable ............ the FMP sub is new this year, but I've used ancestry since about 2004 and wouldn't be without it.

Go to freebmd for all births marriages and deaths from July 1 1837 to about 1975 - ish. BMDs up to about 2005 are on ancestry

Remember that you can also search subscription sites to see if your ancestors are on there, you just cannot see the details .................. some people do that, and then come on here to ask for someone else to check the information

Malyon you are amazing, I don;t where you found all this stuff but I am grateful for it, thank you.
Sylvia, I think there must be two John Appletons born in 1777, the one born in Brompton is the one I need to follow.
And from that I now know that Johns parents were called William and Sarah.
Can someone give me a pointer where to look please ;-)

I think I have the right John Appleton c1777, he married Jane?
They had a son George born c1811, they probably had more kids but this is as far as I have got. Like I said I am new at this sort of thing.
George married Margaret Carter in Warrington so that puts them in the right area if John was from the North West.
I could of course be completely wrong :-)
