It depends on which site you are using. If you mean on Genes then I can't tell you as I don't use their records but you certainly can search by address on Findmypast. |

Thanks, it is an institution rather than an address, The North Devon Asylum . I know that sometimes the inmates names are not written in full. I'm looking to see if a William Cater was there in 1881 or 1891. I've tried searching by name but can't find him so perhaps it will be the case for this institution. Alison |

People in institutions are often listed by their initials only, so try searching using W as first name and C as surname. Also can be listed as 'inmate' or 'patient'. |

When was William Carter born? |

Thanks, I didn't know about searching under initials only. I don't think either is my relative who was a railway porter, however it has opened up many search possibilitiesI'm also searching his brother Henry as I'm not sure which was the father of William Cater who is the real protagonist. William senior was born in 1846, Henry in 1851 and William in about 1871. Thanks. Alison |

Do you have any of them on earlier census records? Can you post the details if you do as that would make looking for them easier. |

This baptism is probably a complete red herring as a couple of years out. The father William is a railway policeman, abode is Ipplepen. |
