Hi, I am looking for information on Susan Whitlock, her parents and grand parents. She was born in 1828 England. She died in 1912 Blandford forum Dorset where she was known as granny turner. I believe she had children with Nehemiah Ayres then they changed their surname to Turner and Nehemiah changed his name to John. They went on to have more children with the surname Turner. Any information would be appreciated. Nicola.

I am still currently trying to track down all the children but I believe they switched to Turner sometime in the 1870's. I know they had a daughter called Rhoda Ayres but at the time of Rhoda's marriage to Charles Stockwell in about 1874 she was called Rose Turner. No marriage has been found between Nehemiah and Susan but as they were gypsies I think they married among their gypsy families but never legally registered a marriage.

could she have been married to a whitlock

|
It is a possibility that she married a Whitlock as I have struggled to find a birth for susan whitlock in Berkshire. This is the only place of birth i have found for her on a record.
|
You won’t be able to find a birth record for her - the best you can hope for is a baptism
All births found so far for her children have MMN Whitlock, so no reason to think she ever married
|
I have looked through Berkshire baptisms for susan whitlock and tried different spellings of susannah but have found nothing.

Maybe a connection to this Whitlock family that are living in Inkpen??? (where Susan has he daughter Caroline baptised in 1853)

This family may be interesting to trace. Alice was buried in Baydon and Susan is said to have been born in Baden.

Could this be pertaining to her?
Wednesday before Mr. H. Symlercombe Bovver (chairman), Dr. Leach, aud Mr. A. G. Creech, two gipsies named Henry Turner and Susan Whitelock were charged on remand with neglecting Britannia Turner, aged six.—Mr. W. H. Creech appeared for the N.S.P.C.C.— 05 January 1900 - Western Gazette - Yeovil, Somerset, England
Essentially, Britannia was seen at the Seymour Arms, Shillingstone, crying and wet through. Susan *Whittock* was lying drunk in a ditch. She was advised to take the child somewhere safe. She was later seen by a PC sitting on a basket with the child near. The PC took the child to the workhouse where her clothes were burnt as she was so filthy. The PC saw Henry Turner the next day and he confirmed the child was his. He was bound for 6 months good behaviour on the payment of £5. Susan Whittock was discharged and Britannia was sent to the Union. The RSPCC was involved and suggested finding a home for her.
