Member Since: March 2005 Posts: 903 Send Message	I have Thomas Roberts b. 1880 married to Jane Roberts/Bavis b. 1889. They married in 1909. These are my grandparents and they had five children - Catherine b. 1912, Thomas b. 1916, William b. 1918, Margaret b. 1921 and Lavinia b. 1924 ... but my Mom once told me that there was another baby that died but that was all she knew. I am trying to find them in the 1911 census but the only ones I can find are boarding with a Murray family in Eldon Street, St. Helens. They have a 10 month old son named Thomas with them and I wonder if this is the baby that died. I've found two deaths in freebmd - one in 1912 age 1 and one in 1915 age 5. Is the only way I can find the correct one to send for the certificate??

	from the new GRO Index ROBERTS, THOMAS BAVIS GRO Reference: 1910 S Quarter in PRESCOT Volume 08B Page 782 ROBERTS, CATHERINE BAVIS GRO Reference: 1912 S Quarter in PRESCOT Volume 08B Page 1557 ROBERTS, THOMAS BAVIS GRO Reference: 1916 M Quarter in PRESCOT Volume 08B Page 1426 It looks as though Thomas b. 1910 is the one who died, and then they gave the same name to the baby born in 1916

	and yes, the only way to be sure that you have the right death is to send for the death certificate.

Member Since: March 2005 Posts: 903 Send Message	Thanks Sylvia. I was hoping there might be another way but I was grasping at straws!! From the new GRO index, the first one you list is the Thomas b. 1910 so you're probably right about that. My grandmother was also named Roberts but her mother 're-married' to a Bavis - hence the two names. Just had a disaster here - moved house a few months ago and lost all my BMD's collected over the years, so that's why I was hoping for another way. Thanks.

	and we also have to remember the current "glitch" in the new GRO Index ........... they do not have a means of distinguishing between the child who died at 1 month from the child who died at 1 year My gut feeling is that the child who died aged 5 (months or year) in 1915 might well be the one. Why?? well, Thomas was born September quarter 1910, and was on the the 1911 census as aged 10 months. Thus he would have been older than 1 year in the June quarter 1912.

	The two names on the birth record reflect the mother's maiden name so Father's surname ROBERTS, Child's forenames CATHERINE Mother's maiden name BAVIS What the parents decided to call themselves after then is an entirely different matter & has no bearing on the birth registration

Member Since: March 2005 Posts: 903 Send Message	Not sure if this should be a separate thread or not. Can anyone help me find Jane Roberts/Bavis mentioned above, in the 1901 census. Jane was born in 1889, in St. Helens, Lancs., to parents John Price Roberts and Louisa Dennett. Louisa left her husband and went to live with Thomas Bavis and in 1891 census they are living at 5 Hibbert St., Oldham. Jane married Thomas Roberts in 1909 and her marriage certificate says she was living at 185 Boundary Road, St. Helens. I just can't seem to find her or her mother and Thomas Bavis in the 1901 census. Thanks.

Jane would be my grandmother, Kate would be Catherine, her sister. Interesting that Catherine was born in Ashton-under-Lyne and yes, that birth for Catherine is correct - Louisa's maiden name was Dennett. Now I'll have to try to find those elusive children!! Thanks.

	The new GRO Index is fantastic ........... they have digitised their records, and show the mmn for children born 1837 to 1915/16 http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp You have to sign up, and then log in each time, but it is free Click on Order Certificates Online and search the GRO historic ....... scroll down to LogIn, and Register as an Individual

I'm trying to fill in gaps - as mentioned above, I've lost all my BMD certificates and of course hadn't entered some of the info on my tree. Now I'm playing catch-up. Thanks again.
