Hi Marie,
That is great news about your daughter. I hope that she continues to progress well.

I also forgot to say Huia, sorry about your tooth, a nuisance as well as an expense I am sure. Hope you can get it fixed ok.

Sallie

Sallie Report 29 Jun 2012 11:56

Good morning to you all. It's lovely to see the thread busy again.

Well I am wondering whether to go up to town or not, I have to go to the post office and a couple of other shops, but although it's dry at the moment it looks as though it's going to rain.....very clody and dull.

Huia, sorry about your tooth, hope the dentist can sort it out for you tomorrow.

Ann, no it wasn't worth going through the flood to M&S, couldn't get what I was looking for, although I did get some food shopping.I'll have to go to Derby tomorrow morning now.....I need to get myself a pair of brown trousers, so hopefully I'll get it there.lol!!

Jean, sorry to hear that your laptop is gone completely, hope it won't be too long before they can get it sorted.

Caz, I hope that you now have your antibiotics and that they will soon start to make you feel better. Thinking of you. Sending you lots of love and ((((((((((hugs))))))))) . <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

Marie, very good news about your daughter, wishing her a good and speedy recovery.

I don't think there are any choir groups around here, at least not that I know of. Mind you, with my voice I don't think they would want me in the choir..........I can't sing for toffee.lol!!!

Mo, how are things with you and Roly today? Hope you are both OK.
Like Ann, I have never been to one of those performances and I don't think that I would go to one either......I'm always a bit wary of that kind of thing, I'd be worried that they would tell me something that would worry me.lolol!!

Sylvia, our rugs and carpets need cleanling badly, we've been wondering if it would be worth buying one of those steam cleaners. We've bought different cadgets in the past, used them to start with and then they've been pushed in a cupboard and never used again.

Heard from Joyce yesterday, she has a chest infection so isn't feeling too good at all. Hope she will soon feel a lot better.

Hello to Linda, Lorraine and anyone else that I might have forgotten.

I've decided to go up to town now, so will speak to you all later.

Take care everyone.

Love, Sallie.xxx

Oh my goodness, look what happens when I leave you all for a night on your own.
Huia breaks her tooth, Sallie gets caught in a storm, and our Caz is still not to good, Sylvia's steam cleaner decides to pack up, Jeans laptop is having a funny turn, the only really good news was hearing that Marie's daughters op went well. I just dont believe it.

Well Sylvia, it looks like you got a good deal for your trip to see the family at christmas.
It does sound strange, having to arrange travel this far in advance, but it looks like it certainly has paid off for you.
I know it's a long journey, but you both enjoy it don't you, meeting so many different nationalities on the way, and having a good old chat to them.

Marie, what do you think about us starting a G.R choir on here. ( the cats choir is what we should be called )
Apart from yourself and Huia, I bet none of us would admit to being able to hold a note. I certainly cant....I scare all the neighbourhood cats away at night, when I am sat in the bath singing to myself. :-D

I must go, as we have got to go to our daughters house in a minute. Bless her, she phoned me last night to tell me she had sat in the hospital for two and a half hours. She was trying to move a bedroom unit from one bedroom to another, and she dropped it on her toe, and broke it. She sliced through the toe as well, and there was blood everywhere.
Just going over to check she is o.k, and managing to hobble around.
Silly girl still went to work today as well, instead of resting it up, and the darned thing keeps bleeding, so good old Roly will have to change the dressing for her.
It's no good me trying to do it, especially if it's still bleeding, they would have to pick me up of off the floor. The sight of blood does that to me.
Speak to you tomorrow girls, love to all.

Hugs for Sallie, Caz, and Joyce our poorly friends.

Hi Zak I know you must think it's funny the way I got my prescription but it is a special anti-biotic that chemists don't normally stock, no one in Bfd had any, even the maker of it. Anyway after taking it for two days I am starting to feel better, thank goodness. Just hope it does the job as my kidneys have been poorly for a while now.
Huia I'm sorry about your tooth, hope you can get it fixed easily.
I went for my x-ray this morning, what a carry on, just because I have a niggardly cough when I'm tired, hope things are ok.

Helloooo girls,
I have just has a txt from our lovely Jean, and she will be off line for about two weeks whilst her laptop is being repaired.
I bet she will be climbing the walls, and up to her armpits in cards by that time. lol
We will be thinking of you honey, and waiting to hear all your news when you get back.

Caz, it's lovely to hear that you are feeling a bit better now. Theres nothing worse than an ailment that keeps hanging around, and we not being able to shift it.
Like you, I have a niggardly cough when I lay down at night. In fact I can remember my mum taking me to the doctor as a child, as she was so fed up of me coughing at night, and keeping them awake. The doctor said I had got, now get this.... Post Nasal Drip, where phlemb (sp) drips down the back of the throat at night, and causes coughing.
It annoys me on the occasions when I wake myself up coughing, and then can't get back to sleep.
I am either waking myself up with the cough, or passing win* ( oops sorry about that, how rude of me, but it's a fact of life ). Full of wind and piddle thats me. lol

Oooh Lorraine, cockles in vinegar, the thought is making my mouth water.
Do you have to wear the mask for sleep apnea (sp) My Roly suffers from it as well, but he was a few numbers under the required amount warranted for use of the mask and oxygen.
He snores and grunts like a pig, but at least that way, I know that he is still breathing.
I hope your young lady is settling in well. I used to be a foster parent as well, and did respite work for a few years. It's such a good feeling knowing that you have helped a child along it's path of life.

Well girls, I will love you and leave you. Take care my friends, love and hugs Mo xxx

Hi Mo

and everyone

It has been "steady rain"

Tomorrow is Canada Day

July 1st is Canada's 145th Birthday ................... festivities, parades, fireworks, etc etc.

The Baptist Church across the street has put out strings or red and white banners.

We stay home, quietly ............ neither of us is very good in big crowds.

But here is a bit of a teaser for you, just for Canada Day ................

Did you know the following foods were invented or discovered in Canada???

1. Ginger Ale ......... This was originally invented in Ireland, but a Canadian made changes to the recipe in 1907, to produce Canada Dry Ginger

2. Instant Mashed Potatoes ............ invented in 1962, as a means of feeding the military and starving people

3. McIntosh Apples ......... 20 trees discovered on his property by John McIntosh in 1811

4. Pablum ............. this baby food was developed in 1931. It is a combination of fortified dried wheat, corn, bonemeal, and oatmeal.

5. Poutine ............. a French-Canadian favourite. French fries (chips) with gravy and cheese curds on top.

6. Processed cheese ............ Kraft cheese slices were developed in 1916. J L Kraft was a Canadian who emigrated to the US, then invented a way to preserve cheese.

7. Yukon Gold Potatoes ............. a cross between 2 kinda of potaotes made in Guelph Ontario

8. Canola oil ............. developed in the early 1970s as a means of using rapeseed oil for human consumption.

:-D :-D :-D :-D

Morning all
Sylvia the Canadian facts were interesting especially as I have a large contingient of Canadian cousins, living in the Toronto area.

Mo your cough? especially at night? We when I was unwell a couple of winters back I had that chest problem, it was diagnosed as sarcodosis, which thankfully cleared and has never come back. BUT at the time my husband asked the consultant about my coughing at night. I had no asthma and no infection. The consultant said sometimes people with reflux are woken by a cough, it is the acid coming back because of lying down. I was put on "LANSOPRAZOLE" only one capsule at bedtime and for nearly 3 years have not had the problem. So it might be worth seeing the dr and asking if this could be you too.

The sun is shining. I have done all my planting and just need to keep the pots watered now, as we still have a hosepipe ban!!! LOL Might be going for a walk later with my son, his wife and their cocker spaniel.
The shawl is growing slowly, much finer wool but it is a gorgeous pattern. It will keep me occupied for quite a while.

Have a lovely sunday everyone. Happy 1st July/Canada Day to Sylvia

Afternoon people. Linda your shawl sounds as if it will be ebautiful, I don't think I'd have the patience to knit in 3 ply these days. I do sometimes suffer with reflux so that could be the answer to my night time cough ( which is not every night).

Hi mo yes its for that i dont really undestrand why i have it but i hold my breath 25 times a hour and snore very loud so the machine starts of nice and slow, and when i wake for a drink its like a cold hairdryer going off, its horrendous to look at there is a strap across my head mask witch clips into head straps that go round the back, first night was difficuklt

but last night was better i managed to have no leakage from it so according to monitor i went to be at 6 ish (always shatterd from charity stall) woke for drinks etc and slept till 10am this morning feeling very rested, so looking forward to tonight.

specky understands what you mean as i would wake him and he would say if i was asleep the snoring and grunting was bad but what was worse was the breath holding, until he prodded me, he said it feels like forever but its prob not that long, its just worrying.

when i was tested about 6 byrs ago one othe hospital doc or mine said i had it other said i didnt so no treatment, but difference with this test they put a clip on my finger which recorded breathing.

i really hope they can help roly more than they are doing, must be worrying for you too.

specky cant get over the silence lol. i didnt realise i wouldnt snore. :-0 :-0

yes young lady is good , we had fostered a younger girl and still keep in touch she still calles me muvver but lets call her A is in transition from child to adult so it works out like she is lodging with care, we have a lot off appointments tomorrow

i loved doing it before but i am to unwell for younger care now

we just been for sunday dinner at mums which she loved and met mum, so all good

how long did you foster mo , it is nice making a difference, my mum really annoyed me a few yrs ago, she said something on the lines of "oh i couldnt be doing with that it wasnt her fault children were left like this, well she has never gone out of her way for anyone, so id sooner be me anyday, i dont think you choose to be kind i think your born that way,
I always say im not getting involved with things anymore other than caring, like emptying your fridge for a friend without a thankyou, running people around without offer of petrol, we do tend to get rained on but i like me and specky and glad we are like this than like my mum.

does anyone else feel there the ones that try to solve everyones problems then end up being piggy in the middle, or you give and give, not to get but just a thankyou would do

better go before im chucked off

love to everyone xxx :-D

Mo in Kent Report 1 Jul 2012 21:29

Good evening girls,
Lorraine, we started fosering over twenty five years ago. Our first baby was six months old at the time, and then when her younger brother was born, two years later, we had him as well at the same time.
They stayed with us, till the eldest one was seven. Mum then went on to have another child, but we decided enough was enough, and refused to have him.
We then did respite care for Social Services for about six years.
But when it got to the point where the last childrens mother was getting more help than the children, I decided enough was enough. It was the children that needed the help, not the moo of a mother. She was such a hateful person, suffice to say, that one child suffered more than enough at her hands, and nothing was done against her.
We are still in contact with our very first two children, and speak to them very often on here.
The eldest is now 25, but still lives at home with her mother. The boy is now at university, and aged 23.
They make me feel sooo proud that we did a good job with them, at the beggining of their lives, and they still think of us as mum and dad, even though they have their own mum.
Talking of your oxygen mask, my friends husband has one, and it keeps her awake at night, clunking away to itself.

Linda, I have got to see the doctor on Tuesday, about my blood tests, and knowing Roly, he is bound to mention my cough again.
We are very lucky here, the hosepipe ban has been lifted in this area. But we have had soo much rain, our plants haven't needed so much watering, just a light watering does the job thank you.

Sylvia, I hope Canada day goes well for you all. Will you be able to see the fireworks from your house? Like you, I no longer like crowded places.
It was different when I was younger, but then different times all together weren't they.
You could walk the streets without fear of getting mugged, and your purse stolen.
These days there are to many drunken yobs walking the streets after dark, and really also during daylight hours.

Ann, next time I contact Jean, I will pass your message on ,re the package you received.
Hows you and T doing now?
Did you watch the tennis last night, Andy Murrays game I mean. My word it didn't finish till eleven o clock last night.
I know one thing for sure, he will have to up his game in the next round, but last night was a thrilling match to watch.

No news from Sallie or Caz, lets hope they are both o.k. Has anyone heard how Joyce is now. ? I know she was not to good after going to the meet.

Must go now girls. Take care everyone. Love Mo xxx

Huia

Huia Report 1 Jul 2012 22:16

Good evening.

I went to an antiques fair yesterday. I took with me a glass plate of Queen Vic's diamond jubilee. It has a crack in it and I wondered if it could be repaired but the expert said that unless I was very wealthy it was not worth it as loads of them were churned out, in fact they had had one at the fair the previous day.

I bought myself a small display cabinet, spent far more than I would have liked, but have wanted one for all my knick knacks for years, save dusting. It is now installed where my piano had been. It is not exactly an antique. The man makes them from re-cycled timber. This one from rimu, which we have as flooring in our lounge.

I also bought a small blue wedgewood dish in the shape of a trefoil. I decided to give it to my sister as she is in guiding (trefoil guild) and once mentioned that she didnt have any wedgewood and would love some. I hope she likes it. It will be a belated 80th birthday present.

I met our postie there so we had lunch together. I was telling her about Dave's funeral which she would have liked to attend, but was doing her rounds. I saw a tear come to her eye and told her to stop that or she would start me. Can you see the pair of us howling over our cups of tea? Dave was the loveliest man. I had saved one of the sheets of service for her and she seemed to appreciate that.

Off to the hospice shop today. I hope I dont cough too much, but I am taking my aniseed balls and can pop one into the corner of my mouth to let it slowly disolve. It seems to control the cough to a large extent. Pity about my teeth and weight though!

Huia.

i cried when he went back, he had held the door open for me offered to do some jobs, he asked specky if he could help, but the thing that made me cry was he said it looks like im going to have to work twice as hard at school and twice as hard at college like his brother because of his unsettled way of life.

what usually happens when she is rehommed she will want rid of the boy so she can party, its outrages as we down sized 3 yrs ago we will have to turn the dining room into a bedroom, i dont want to move i love it here, but we have to play it by the book, its strange where the passion comes from to want to help he is so bright, he has promised me he will look after himself but i worry he is a very pretty boy, i dont need to say an ymore.but well done you tooxxx

Hi Mo

and everyone

Mo ................. I also have a funny little cough every now and again, especially at bedtime.

I also have Post Nasal Drip, and have a prescribed nasal spray to help with that.

BUT I'm told that my cough is due to one of the medications I take. It is a common side effect of a medication taken for high cholesterol ............ any of the ones ending in -statin. And I've been told that if the medication is working, then I just have to put up with the cough. If the medication isn't working on the cholesterol, then they might be able to find another drug that doesn't have this side effect.

All I do is suck a cough lozenge ............... the cough usually stops as soon as I put the thing in my mouth! I use a herbal lozenge called Bentasil, from Sweden. It has honey and lemon, and no drugs. Ricola from Switzerland also works well for me.

Huia ................ how did you get on with your tooth??????

Take care everyone

Sylvia, that is interesting about the cough as I take Simvastatin, maybe that is my problem, still better to keep the cholestrol down, the cough is not that bad.

Huia you had a good spend at the antiques fair then, I'd like a display cabinet, then I'd like space to put one as well which explains why I have not bought one :-D

Mo in Kent

Mo in Kent Report 2 Jul 2012 15:39

Hello girls,
Lorraine, I do know how you feel about the young lad. If the youngsters have not had a permanant father figure in their lives, they are torn apart by trying to please the mother. They live with the fear of her rejction by her, when ever she feels like having a fling or spree.
My eldest two foster children were Nigerian, and Dad returned to his mother country, when mum was pregnant with their third child, and never returned.
Mum brought the children up alone, after they returned to her, and she worked like a trojan to keep a roof over their heads, and food in their bellies.
I started of doing private fostering, and received £25 a week, to feed and clothe the children. The money side of it didn't bother me, I did it out of my love for children.
When we decided to retire from private fostering, my social worker asked us to do the respite work, hence us taking in lots of problem children.
But the final results were for the most, very very good. Till we got to the final problem mother...enough said about her, as words could not express my detestation of the woman.

Aah Huia, what a shame about your Queen Victoria plate. We all keep some old things, in hopes that some day they will become collectables, for our grandchildren, but we don't always know how many were mass produced at the time.
A friend bought me a beautiful china cup and saucer, with the faces of Prince William and Kate Middleton, prior to their wedding.
They are both in their boxes, and I shall never take them out of them. But I know that thousands were manufactured at the same time, and it would take donkeys years for them to be of any value at all, to anyone.
I love them, and they sit in my China Cabinet, with my Royal Albert china, and crystal glasses and decanters, but will never be of great value, but will be handy for my great grandchildren to display in future years, should they want them as memento's of me.

Sylvia, it's surprising how many of us are on statins, and suffer from this tickly annoying cough. But mine has been occuring since I was about 9 years old, such a flippin nuisance I can tell you.
If I suck a sweet on retiring, I get reflux, and wake up with rotten heart burn, so I can't bloomin win.
It would not be the first time for me to have fallen asleep, with the sweet in my mouth, and to wake with it stuck on the inside of my cheek, and dribble on my pillow from sucking it. Oooh I am a dirty mucky kid arn't I lol

I had a p.m from our Sallie, she is well, and will be back with us very soon.
She seems quite chirpy love her, lets hope and pray she continues in this vain.

Well once again, I must go and sort out some grub for the two of us.
Take care my friends. Love and hugs Mo xxx

Mo. have you tried Gavilast for your heartburn? You take 1 tablet and it lasts 8 hours. If I have heartburn at night I take one and it works for me.
Pleased to hear Sallie is ok, she was around over the weekend, or maybe it was Friday.

I have managed to get two cards finished today, July is a busy time for birthdays in this family and while I had all my other cards made I hadn't made the family ones. Just got OH's to do now, need to think about that one.

We fostered in the 60s/70s but except for two ours were all under 8 and ours were all short term. Saying that we did have one baby boy from 2 weeks to 6 months. I gave up when yet another house move meant we'd have to go all through the registration process for the third time.
