There are 3 ships that have been missing in the Arctic for over 150 years.

First, Sir John Franklin was tryig to get through the NorthWest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Got stuck in the ice for 3 years. Eventually, Franklin died, the remaining men left the ships, most if not all died, and the ships sank.

In 1849 another expedition was mounted in an attempt to find the Franklin one ...... got caught in ice, ship sank in 1850, but all except 3 men were eventually rescued.

Expedition after expedition has failed to find any trace of the Franklin expedition, nor have they found the 1850 ship.

Until last week.

News just coming out from the Arctic .......... an expedition of marine archeologists from Ottawa went to an island in the Arctic, where Eskimo lore says the ship once was. Ice moved out of the Bay for a very brief spell of time

............. side sonar equipment sent down

....... ship found in less than 15 minutes!

It's sitting upright on the bottom, masts etc have disappeared, but it can be seen from the surface when the ice is not there.

The ice keeps drifting in and out ............... so still problems.

Not only that, but they have found the burial places of the 3 men who died of scurvy ..... and will be having talks with the British government about what to do with the bodies.

In August, the same team is going to try to find the Franklin ships, and the men who left to try to walk out.

I'm just blown away by how short a time it took to find the ship, after so many previous hunts have failed ..... pure serendiptity that they were there when the almost permanent ice thinned and moved away.
